French police arrest over 100 after Halloween 'purge' night riots

    2 Min Read

PARIS (Reuters) - French police arrested more than 100 people after gangs of masked youths stormed through Paris suburbs and the center of Lyon on Halloween night, authorities said on Thursday, following a message on social media calling for a “purge” against police.
Police fired teargas overnight at hundreds of youths who barged through the city center of Lyon, hassling police and passers by, shattering shop windows and setting rubbish bins on fire.
In the deprived Seine-Saint-Denis area north of Paris, a sportswear store was looted and young people robbing a grocery store attacked police with acid, according to Denis Jacob of police union Alternative Police.
Authorities said the riots were stoked by messages circulated on social media, apparently inspired by the Hollywood horror film franchise “The Purge”, which depicts a violent dystopia in which all crimes are made legal for a day.
“Halloween must remain a celebration, the purge is not a joke, the purge is a threat,” Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told reporters on Thursday.
A young man who wrote a Snapchat message calling for the “purge” against police forces was arrested earlier this week. He was released on Tuesday pending trial on Nov. 28, police said.
Castaner said 15,000 police were deployed all across France on Wednesday night in anticipation, and that violence was less severe than a year ago.
Youths in depressed suburbs of French cities have been torching hundreds of vehicles on New Year’s Eve and Bastille Day since the early 1990s.
Halloween is not traditionally celebrated in France, although it has become more visible since the late 1990s under the influence of American films and TV series, with shop windows often showing hollowed out pumpkin heads and witches.

It hurts to see France like this. They should have voted for Le Pen instead of globalist puppet Macron

#France: That was #Halloween last night in #Lyon, the usual (illegal) suspects from the large circle of diversity rioted and destroyed public property, the police responded with tear gas grenades.

It all started when last week, a young Arab teenager named “Aissa”, urged people on Snapchat to riot and assault the police on Halloween, apparently being inspired by the film franchise “The Purge”.
Aissa, who’s still in highschool, sent a picture in Snapchat urging people living in Grenoble’s suburbs, to “purge” on 31 October. He explained that by purging he meant that “teams” of people would fight each other.
Even though Aissa apologised immediately after and was taken aback by the number of people getting ready to “purge”, pictures on social media of different “purge rules” circulated.
One of them was titled “Purge’s rules in Corbeil-Essones” and featured 10 rules. Some of the rules are : “Dress in black, with a mask if possible”, and “All weapons are authorised”, “Burn all you see”, “Any theft is allowed (car, bike, scooter)” and “The police should be attacked with mortars, fireworks and stones”.
What started as a joke turned into a nightmare as thousands of thugs followed the call to “purge”. Today, the Interior Minister said that 15,000 policemen had to be deployed to control the rioters and more than 100 arrests have been made, just last night.
Almost all France’s major cities have been hit by the phenomenon : Lyon, Rennes, Nantes, Metz, Toulouse, Grenobles and Marseille. Even french counties in the Caraibes have been “purged”.
The following is an early evaluation of the events in some of the cities, made by Lefigaro.
In Rennes, 13 cars and 20 rubbish bins were burned, a fire truck was pelted with stones and a 15 year old teenager was wounded by a flashball after he threw stones at a police patrol.
In Metz, three bus stops were damaged and a bus was also targeted with projectiles.
In Poitiers, five cars were burned and two were damaged.
In Nantes, three cars and eight rubbish bins were burned, and three minors were arrested.
In Toulouse, two policemen were wounded after they arrested two “masked individuals”. Cars and rubbish bins were also burned.
In Lyon, 12 people were arrested for rioting. One of the many arrests Lyon’s police made was of a minor who had also launched a call to “purge” on social media. Seven “vehicles” were also burned, according to Lyon’s prefecture.
In Sain-André, in the Caraïbes, black youths tried to force entry into a police station and wounded a policeman while doing so. According to “Lapremiere”, more than a dozen criminals were arrested.
In Vigneux-Sur-Seine, many arrests were made for damage and theft, in Etampes, twenty masked individuals looted a shop. Some were arrested but the majority of the criminals are apparently still on the run.
Still in Vigneux-sur-Seine, in Montgeron, a small grocery store was attacked by a group of young people, when the police arrived, an “acid bottle” was thrown on them. According to Leparisien, two police agents are still “recovering”.
