Voter identification bill to be considered by TX Senate Mon

Updated: Voter identification bill to be considered by Senate Monday

Legislation that requires voters to present photo identification before casting their ballots will be taken up by state senators today.

Gov. Rick Perry last week designated the issue as an emergency item, which gives the Legislature the ability to consider such bills in the first 30 days of the session.

The issue, which divided Democrats and Republicans during the last session, will likely pass this time around.

Republicans, who have supported the measure, have a super majority in the House. Senate Republicans have also changed the requirement of a two-thirds rule on voter identification so Democrats cannot block the issue from being heard on the floor.

Republican lawmakers have said that such a requirement is needed to avoid fraud at the polls. They say that residents have to show their photo identification when they go to the bank and should have to do the same when voting.

Democrats say that substantial evidence of fraud does not exist. They have argued that such a requirement would marginalize minorities, elderly and low income voters who may not have a photo identification.

No more excuses for allowing voter fraud to continue to take place. States must do what they can to see that citizens vote, and that fraud cannot easily take place.

Democrats in groups like ACORN and the labor unions appear to not be focused on voter fraud.
