A Washington state man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder after police said he shot and killed an intruder who was showering inside one of his residencies.

Bruce Fanning, 59, of Mason County, discovered a stranger showering in one of the two residencies that he owns Saturday at around 8 a.m., Mason County Sheriff’s Lt. Travis Adams said. Adams added that Fanning runs a business out of the second property.

Fanning told investigators that he first fled the scene, grabbed a gun and then returned where he opened fire on the intruder, court documents said. Fanning told police he thought the stranger was drunk and became afraid when the stranger made threats toward him.

Police said Fanning fired four shots through the shower curtain, killing the intruder, according to the New York Times. Fanning called authorities after the shooting.

The victim was identified as Nathaniel Joseph Rosa, 31, of Bothell. Rosa had worked at Woodmor Elementary School in Bothell and was described as a “compassionate educator,” according to Q13 Fox.

Police said there was no indication that Fanning was threatened by Rosa and that the facts did not support Fanning’s right to self-defense. According to Washington state law, “no person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property.”

Authorities were still trying to determine why Rosa inside the property.

Fanning’s bail was set at $250,000.

Yep. The guy leaves the house and runs next door to get his gun, he should have called 911 then, and stayed outside. Why would he go back in and shoot the guy through a curtain 4 times? He's going to have a hard time proving he felt his life was in danger. Bad mistake on his part seems to me.

Authorities were still trying to determine why Rosa inside the property.
Either there was a relationship between the two, or Rosa was squatting on the property. If Rosa was squatting, Fanning had no business shooting the man. If Fanning had been in the residence at the time Fanning broke in, he might have an argument, but certainly not returning to the place with a firearm. Very strange.

I don't think an elementary teacher was squatting on his property. I'm thinking he knew him and wanted to get rid of him. I think he had his gun already. I don't think he ran back home to get his gun and came back, I think he murdered him. There was no report of breaking and entering, so the guy had a key or knew where one was to let himself in. Very strange story. I think the police were right to make the arrest from what little we know so far.

Murder charge for man who fatally shot stranger in shower

Posted 5:48 PM, April 5, 2017, by Associated Press, Updated at 05:51PM, April 5, 2017

Bruce Fanning, 59, of Belfair, was charged with first-degree murder Wednesday, April 5, 2017.

BELFAIR, Wash. (AP) — A Mason County man has been charged with first-degree murder after he fatally shot a man Saturday who was in a shower on his property.

Multiple news outlets report that 59-year-old Bruce Fanning of Belfair was charged Wednesday in the death of 31-year-old Nathaniel Rosa of Bothell.

Fanning was arrested after reporting the shooting at a business on his property.

Court documents say Fanning entered the business and saw Rosa in the shower. Fanning told detectives he was afraid and thought Rosa was drunk.

Detectives say instead of calling 911, Fanning went back to his home, got a handgun and then shot Rosa three times.

Prosecutors say Rosa had been staying at a nearby residence and might have mistakenly entered Fanning's building.

Fanning's bail was set at $250,000. He wasn't listed as in custody at the jail Wednesday afternoon.

Yeah, it sure would. I'm sure as the case progresses, there will be more information. I don't think the police are right about Rosa entering the building by mistake. Maybe, but how did he get in to begin with? Anyway, even without knowing why or how Rosa was there in the first place, the shooter should have never left, then come back with a gun and shot someone 3 times through a shower curtain, and then call the police. He should have called the police and stayed outside.
