A gunman has opened fire at a country music bar during a student night in the city of Thousand Oaks, California, killing 12 people and injuring several before turning the gun on himself.
The shooter stormed the Borderline Bar and Grill wearing a black trenchcoat armed with a pistol equipped with an extended magazine and smoke grenades began targeting people as young as 18.
Ron Helus - a Ventura County sheriff sergeant - was among the deceased. The 'hardworking' officer, who was due to retire this year, had 29 years of experience in the force and leaves behind a wife and son.
An additional '10 to 15' victims were injured during the mass shooting, including a doorman, a young female cashier and college students.

The perpetrator, dressed in all-black, wearing a baseball cap, sunglasses and a mask covering the bottom part of his face, walked up to the entrance at 11.20pm and shot the doorman before making his way into the venue.
He then opened fire on a young female cashier before throwing smoke grenades onto the dancefloor and letting off rounds into the crowd.
First responders from the Ventura County Sheriff's Office and Highway Patrol arrived at 11.23pm and got into a gunfight with the suspect, during which a deputy sheriff was shot and later died at Los Robles Hospital from his injuries.

Several minutes later a SWAT team arrived and found 11 victims dead inside. The suspect was also found lifeless after apparently turning the gun on himself.
Officials said the attack was planned and reports of use of smoke grenades were 'credible'.
There were 'at least 200 people' inside the bar tonight when the gunman opened fire, police said, and the number of casualties is 'very likely' to go up.
One witness told ABC7: 'I was at the front door talking to my stepdad. I heard these big pops.
'There were three or four and I hit the ground. The security guard was dead and the man had a handgun.
'He threw in smoke bombs and he kept firing. People threw chairs out of the windows to try to get away.
'The gunman had glasses and a black jacket. He had a big hand gun.'
Another witness said: 'This maniac came in. Threw in smoke to confuse people and opened fire on the dancefloor. He's taken many young lives'.

A Ventura County Sheriff's Office official said approximately 30 shots had been fired inside the building.
Witnesses reported a horrifying scene as gunfire echoed through the club and those inside ran for cover, in some cases breaking windows with chairs and other pieces of furniture to get out of the building.
People were hiding from the shooter in bathrooms and attic spaces, while others who managed to escape fled to nearby gas stations for medical help.
Local hospitals have been inundated with victims who've transported themselves to emergency rooms with injuries seeking medical help.
One witness, who was at the bar with his step-son, described the sequence of events. He said: 'He shot the front doorman, who was just a young man.
'Then he shot the cashier, just a young girl. Then he started moving to the right. He wasn't looking at us.
'Then he went into the office, where all the cash and stuff is. He didn't say anything at all. He just started shooting.'

It's thought that a man opened fire at the bar with a semi-automatic gun at about 11.20pm and was still 'a threat' inside the bar an hour later.
A SWAT team were pictured surrounding the venue in their formations, while the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force and bomb squad were also called to the scene.
Borderline is a country music bar that hosts live music events.
Tonight's event was aimed at college students, according to the bar's website and Instagram page.
K-9 units have been scouring the car park looking for the shooter's vehicle.

A popular college bar in Thousand Oaks, California was the scene of a mass shooting last night. The normally very safe town was changed forever when a man described on-air at ABC 7 as “Middle Eastern-looking” (their words, not ours) armed with a Glock-45 handgun walked up to the doorman of Borderline Bar and Grill and shot him. The gunman proceeded to kill the cashier near the door then entered the bar to continue his deadly shooting spree. He killed 12. Pray for the victims and their families.
Many descriptions of the suspect were given on-air during our viewing of the live local coverage but it’s been eerily quiet on any information about the man who picked this soft target of college kids out for a good time.
Witnesses said he had on a “black trench coat”, wore a hat and glasses. Other reports said he had a beard. It’s being reported that he was a heavily tattooed “white male” and wasn’t carrying identification. That’s puzzling because we know his age and that he was driving his mom’s car. Also, the gun purchase has been traced to Ventura County. He is said to be a resident of Newbury Park, California. Could they not get information from the gun purchase?

More than one witness described his demeanor as calm and quiet.

It’s only been reported that he was 29-years old and drove his mom’s car to the bar to commit this atrocity.
It is unclear whether he took his own life in the bar or was shot by a heroic sheriff’s deputy who entered the building.

It’s been several hours now since this took place yet we know nothing. WHY?

While the media is silent, the cries for gun control have begun by the usual suspects. Kamala Harris and Bill DeBlasio tweeted out the need for gun control. The focus is on everything BUT the suspect.

Las Vegas massacre survivors were in California bar during shooting

Some of the people who were inside the California bar where a gunman went on a deadly rampage also survived last year’s mass shooting in Las Vegas, according to a report.

Chandler Gunn, 23, of Newbury Park, Calif., rushed over to the Borderline Bar & Grill in Thousand Oaks after the Wednesday night massacre to check on a friend who works there — a woman who also was at the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Vegas, where a gunman killed 58 people and wounded hundreds of others, the Los Angeles Times reported.
“A lot of people in the Route 91 situation go here,” Gunn told the outlet. “There’s people that live a whole lifetime without seeing this, and then there’s people that have seen it twice.”
His friend told him that some kind of tear gas was thrown into the bar during the attack and that she saw smoke and heard gunfire before fleeing out the back toward apartments nearby.
Gunn said he hasn’t been able to contact his friend again, but knows she’s safe.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Josh Coaly, 27, stood on the sidewalk waiting to hear from a friend — also a survivor of the Vegas shooting — inside Borderline who had texted him about the massacre.

Coaly said he spoke with his friend, who said he is with his father and doing fine.
“I just came to see if there’s anything I can do,” Coaly said.
And Carl Edgar, 24, who lives in LA’s Tarzana neighborhood, said he had about 20 friends inside the bar, where he’s also a regular, though he wasn’t there on the fateful night.
After hearing about the incident on Snapchat, he immediately texted friends who were at the club.
“Call me,” his friend answered, telling him later that she had escaped and was hiding behind a gas station. After midnight, another friend texted him that she was hiding in a bathroom.
“As far as I know, all of my friends are OK, safe,” he said. “There are a few people we can’t get ahold of, but in these situations people usually turn off their phones to be safe so I’m not gonna get too worried.
“A lot of my friends survived Route 91. If they survived that, they’ll survive this,” he told the paper.
In the Las Vegas shooting on Oct. 1, 2017, Stephen Paddock sprayed gunfire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel into a crowd of 22,000 people at the music festival, killing 58 in the deadliest mass shooting in US history. He later blew himself away with a gunshot to the mouth.

Some survivors of the Las Vegas mass shooting were inside the Borderline Bar in Thousand Oaks, Calif., when a gunman opened fire just before midnight on Wednesday, killing 12.
Hundreds of people were inside the venue for "college country night" when shots rang at around 11:20 p.m. The shooter was dead inside the bar, police said. It was unclear how he died.
Chandler Gunn, 23, of Newberry Park, called a friend who works at the Borderline Bar & Grill, who was also at Route 91 in Las Vegas, The Los Angeles Times reported.
"A lot of people in the Route 91 situation go here," he said, referring to the mass shooting last year in Las Vegas. "There's people that live a whole lifetime without seeing this, and then there’s people that have seen it twice."
Josh Coaly, 27, had been to Borderline several times with his friends, including one who also survived the Vegas shooting, The Times reported.
Coaly told the paper that his friend said he is with his dad and is in good condition.
