Report: Navy homeports 12 more ships in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- The Navy is expected to announce that it will homeport a dozen more ships in San Diego, including two aircraft carriers.

City News Service says an admiral is expected to tell the City Council about the plan Monday afternoon.

The Navy currently has 58 surface ships and six submarines based in San Diego.

Rear Admiral Dixon Smith says the Navy has a $30.5 billion annual economic impact on the city and 26 percent of all jobs in the region are Defense Department- related.
