    Bivouac Of The Dead, by Theodore O'Hara

    The muffled drum's sad roll has beat
    The soldier's last tattoo;
    No more on Life's parade shall meet
    That brave and fallen few.
    On Fame's eternal camping-ground
    Their silent tents are spread,
    And Glory guards, with solemn round,
    The bivouac of the dead.

    Memorial Day, which is observed on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while in the military service. In observance of the holiday, many people visit cemeteries and memorials, and volunteers often place American flags on each grave site at national cemeteries. A national moment of remembrance takes place at 3:00 p.m. local time.

    The Salute Seen Around the World

    Updated May 26, 2014

    It was last year that U.S. Army Ranger Cpl. Josh Hargis was lying on a hospital bed in Afghanistan, hooked up to a breathing tube when he was awarded a Purple Heart for his valor in the battlefield.

    None of that, however, stopped Hargis, 24, from finding the strength to follow military protocol and lift his bandaged hand to salute the Ranger Regimental Commander who pinned the Purple Heart to his red, white and blue blanket.

    "Grown men began to weep and we were speechless at a gesture that speaks volumes about Josh's courage and character," one of the officers present in the hospital room wrote in a letter to Hargis's wife, Taylor. "I will remember it as the single greatest event I have witnessed in my ten years in the Army."

    Today, Hargis and his wife are expecting their first child. And this past March, Hargis participated in Warrior's Walk, a 222-mile hike from Fort Bennet, Georgia, to the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia. Thank you to all the men and women who serve in the United States Armed Forces. And on this day, we also observe Memorial Day for our Fallen Heroes.
    Post your thoughts.
