Education system is failing the kids

Wow, I am not pleased to see this.

As I have posted before, a summer project of our son is having a little candy shop for the kids in our complex.

We have found most of them unable to count the money they have at 6, 7 and 8 years old....

My five year old grandson is starting to already, and my kids at 6 could certainly count it and could piece together how much they had with a listed price in the store, even pretty much knowing what their change would be. I do not think my kids were an exception. I blame ESL programs for this, as the kids I am talking about have been in them and in the public schools.

These seem like bright kids, but they just are not getting taught what they need.

Had to share this, it is very frustrating to see, since our tax dollars pay for it, and these kids are falling behind. I know, nothing new, nothing we have not discussed before.

ESL is a HUGE drain on school budgets. If you ever wonder why art, music, field trips, history, civics, etc. seem to be withering, look no further.

What is a shame is these kids seem to be plenty bright enough, and I believe they could handle not only immersion, but learning all they needed at appropriate ages as well.

My husbands mothers family came from Germany in 1932 as the Nazi's were coming into power. She was six and only knew German. Within six months of being in school, her English was impeccable, and she never fell behind either. Immersion works, and it helps the children of immigrants (even the illegals) feel more a part of life here, than does segregating them.
