The Mercury News reported that Dennis Alexander, a reserve police officer for Sand City, had been providing safety instructions at Seaside High School when he accidentally fired a single shot from a semi-automatic handgun into the ceiling, police said.

A student was hit in the neck by debris after the bullet ricocheted off the ceiling, but was not seriously injured, police said.

The incident was brought under control and classes resumed, but an investigation is ongoing, the Monterey County Herald reported.

“We’re looking into any violation of city ordinance or the penal code and we’ll determine whether or not there are any applicable charges,” Seaside police Chief Abdul D. Pridgen said.

The Monterey Peninsula Unified School district sent out a letter to notify parents of the investigation and that Alexander had been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is underway.

Seaside is about 116 miles south of San Francisco.

Won't be the last time this happens. I do not support arming teachers.

Many of them are unfit and mentally unstable themselves. Here come the lawsuits.

It's voluntary. Furthermore, I would think the unfit and mentally unstable wouldn't agree with the policy and would have no interest in handling a firearm.

I have to believe anyone given such a HUGE responsibility would be extremely well vetted and trained. Many districts in Texas have been doing this for a decade now without incident or school shootings.

I see your point, however, I do believe their are some in the teaching profession that would be suitable for such an awesome responsibility. While many in the teaching profession are crazy liberals, not all of them are. Some have been in the military, in law enforcement, grew up around guns, etc. Just saying there are two sides to the conversation and both are worth considering.

Did you read that the teacher is a reserve police officer?

    And from the article:

Posted this in another similar thread but it seems to apply here also:

Accidents are going to happen, but it was no accident that killed 14 children and 3 teachers in Parkland, Florida, 12 children and one teacher in Columbine, Colorado or the 20 children between six and seven years old and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Conn. That's a total of 56 people deliberately and maliciously murdered in gun free zones. I'll bet the parents, husbands, wives, etc. of those poor murdered souls wish there had been armed protectors available in those instances.

I'm sort of in the middle on this issue, but for the sake of honest discussion, both sides of the conversation need to be heard. Personally, I'd like to see one armed resource officer assigned to each school per 1,000 students. Of course in many places that may be cost prohibitive. I don't know what the best option is, but all options should be seriously considered and evaluated.

The thing is, almost all of these accidental shootings were demonstrations/safety classes. This is different from qualified teachers secretly carrying a weapon just in case. This comparison is like illegal aliens being grouped with legal aliens when discussion illegal aliens.

Hopefully, that would be noticed during the hours of training. We, of course, then depend on the instructor to make the cuts. Like anything, there should be a background check as part of the qualification.

There most likely would not have been 17 deaths in Florida if teachers had been allowed to carry. So now it's about numbers. One armed guard who didn't have the courage to go in equals 17 dead. One cowardly guard plus 3 armed teachers might have equaled 5 deaths. Which do you prefer?

    1. I would have preferred that the coward police officer/security guard in Broward went in and got the shooter instead of hide. After all...he was "trained" a career cop and went through years of instruction and training.

    2. I would have preferred that OBAMA did not change the rules to cover up crimes committed by minorities to skew the statistics of those crimes in the schools and give false security in the community.

    3. I would have preferred that the FBI and police did their job when that lunatic was reported over 50 times that he was a danger to the school, himself and society.

    4. I would have preferred that the several police officers from Broward county went into the school when they got there, instead of standing down, and killed the gunman. Each and every one of those officers had a background check...what good did that do?

    5. I would have preferred that the "teacher" / "reserve police officer" in California emptied his gun of ammunition before he proceeded to "teach" a classroom of children on "gun safety"...LMAO...what kind of training did he get and what is the status of HIS background check? His instructor passed him.

    6. In the case of the California Teacher / Police Officer...maybe his instruction should have "cut" him from the class.

So 17 kids lost their lives because a trained police officer who is a coward did nothing. And then the Broward country police stood down outside and the gunman ran right past them.

Most of these teachers are not qualified to teach school let alone be trusted with the safety of a whole school.

My point is...we have several police officers who have dropped the ball, are cowards and idiots with decades of training. What makes anyone think teachers are going to come in like Superman and save the day. I think this is a can of worms to put this on the teachers.

Also, Sandy Hook...that mother knew that kid had psychological issues and I believe she tried to get help for him too. Nothing was done about it.

How many of these killer children were bullied? What is being done about bullying in school, nothing. There are underlying causes to this that are not looked into. Just knee jerk reaction that will certainly cause unintended consequences.

I think there should be other avenues to secure the school before we start arming up teachers.

You're probably right, Beezer. Schools can just work on better security systems and the police and FBI can work on doing a better job. Works for me!!
