Japan's 50ft-high 'snow walls' open to tourists

Famous snow corridor of the Tateyama Kurobe Apline Route in the Japanese mountains opens to the public

Tourists wander the snow corridor in Tateyama, Toyama, Japan on April 16

Snow walls of up to 50ft (15 metres) in height line the roads of the famous Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route in Toyama, Japan, which opened to the public for the first time in almost five months on Thursday April 16.

Tourists from Japan and abroad were astounded by the sight of the corridor, which runs for a 500 metre stretch of road. The site is a hugely popular attraction for tourists during its brief opening period in the spring of every year. The Alpine Route itself was opened in 1971 and attracts about a million visitors every year.

The sightseeing route stretches over 37km and reaches an altitude of 2,450 metres. It features a series of scenic sights including the Kurobe Dam, hot springs and the Hida Mountains, but the snow corridor of Murudo is arguably the most famous.

The Murodo-daira of Tateyama area has one of the heaviest snowfalls in the world, receiving about seven metres on average. However, the Otani snow mantle near Murudo can receive snowfall of up to an astonishing 20 metres, which allows the famous snow walls to be formed.

The entire route will remain open until November, but tourists may only walk the snow corridor until June 22.

"Since 2000, temperatures in Alaska have dropped by 2.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Scientists reviewed weather reports from 20 climate stations operated by the National Weather Service located across Alaska. 19 of the 20 weather stations reported falling temperatures."
