The 'Historic' Health Care Bill that Americans Don't Want

I can just see it now. After months and months of wrangling, after months and months of arm twisting and deal making, the House and Senate come up with a bill that finally passes. With much pomp and circumstance Barack Obama signs the legislation into law. The media hail the "landmark" legislation as a "new era" for the country. Obama, Pelosi, and Reid hold press conferences saying that passage of the bill was a "great win" for the American people.

In this scenario, would we be talking about legislation that lowers everyone's taxes? Would we be talking about a bill that removes endless regulation from businesses so that they could actually hire people? Would we be talking about cost-cutting measures to help balance the budget? Of course not. We are talking about the health care bill, and how the media, Obama, and the liberal elite view it. Do you think it matters to them that the American people don't want it?

On Monday, Obama was in Ohio to make his "last pitch" for health care. (How many times have we heard that one before?) As noted in The Caucus blog from the New York Times, Ohioans, like the rest of the country, are not buying what Obama is selling. http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2010 ... alth-care/

Ohio voters rated the president negatively for his work on health care in a poll conducted across the state last month by Quinnipiac University. Nearly 6 in 10, 58 percent, said they disapproved of the way Mr. Obama was handling health care, while just 34 percent approved.

Most in the poll, 56 percent, said they disapproved of the proposed changes to the health care system, with a plurality saying that the changes under consideration in Congress go too far.

In a Rasmussen Reports poll released on Monday, 53 percent of respondents said they were opposed to the health care plan proposed by Obama and the Democrats. Only 43 percent favored the plan. As noted by Rasmussen, "Those findings include 23% who Strongly Favor the plan and 46% who Strongly Oppose it." So, nearly all who oppose the plan, strongly oppose it, but only about half of the supporters are strong in their support. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_ ... are_reform

See the pattern? There's not a poll out there which shows Americans favoring Obama's health care plan. With mandates that force people to buy insurance, increased costs, and changes that could end longstanding rules on taxpayer funding of abortions, Americans are lining up in opposition to the bill. And Obama and the Democrats keep right on rolling.

As noted by Byron York in the Washington Examiner, Nancy Pelosi said that "once we kick through this door" (the health care bill), "there'll be more legislation to follow." http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/opini ... 41467.html

In comments that show just how backward people like Pelosi, Obama, and liberal elitists are, Pelosi wants to push through the legislation despite a majority of Americans being opposed to it, and then have a "debate" on the merits of the bill.

In a particularly Alice-in-Wonderland moment, Pelosi argued that the debate over health care reform can begin after the bill is passed. "Pelosi said passing the bill would allow Dems to undertake a 'debate' with Republicans over 'what is the balanced role that government should have,'" writes another pro-reform blogger at the Post, Greg Sargent. According to Sargent, Pelosi explained, "We have to take it to the American people, to say, this is the choice that you have. This is the vision that they have for your health and well being, and this is the vision that we have." Again, in Pelosi's scenario, that debate would occur after the bill is passed.

The Associated Press is reporting that Obama is also turning up the heat. http://www.gopusa.com/news/2010/march/0 ... ure1.shtml

The president is wooing freshman Democrats in the Oval Office, holding at least two one-on-one sessions in the past few days that never appeared on his official schedule, according to aides to two lawmakers invited, Reps. Scott Murphy, D-N.Y., and Suzanne Kosmas, D-Fla.

Both voted "no" when the legislation passed the House on the first go-round last year, but now they're not ruling out siding with the president and Democratic leaders on what's expected to be a cliffhanger vote in the House later this week.

Pro-life Democrats in the House may hold the key to this legislation as the Senate bill that they will be asked to consider does not have language in it that bans taxpayer funding of abortions. http://budget.house.gov/doc-library/FY2 ... on2010.PDF

And this is where the stage is now set. Obama and the Democrats are pulling out all the stops to pass a bill the American people don't want. Obama and company want to break the bank, pass unconstitutional measures, put government more in control of your health care, and use taxpayer money to fund abortions.

I don't want to hear the media going on about how Obama just pulled off a "majority victory" with "milestone" health care legislation. We all need to come together and stop this bill. It IS historic... historically bad.
