Hollywood Conservative Group: 'IRS Told Us We Had Been Targeted'
A group of Hollywood conservatives, which has attempted to maintain a low profile for fear of recrimination from power players in the entertainment industry, says it has been told by the IRS that it has been “targeted.”
Friends of Abe (FOA), named after Abraham Lincoln, was started by actor Gary Senise in 2004 and reportedly includes Jon Voight and Kelsey Grammer among its 1,500 members of the entertainment industry. It now says that the IRS has requested information about its meetings with politicians — including 2012 vice presidential candidate 2012 presidential hopeful Hermain Cain.
FOA, which claims it is not political, is seeking 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, so that donations can be tax-deductible, as is the case with similar “progressive” groups. The status would prohibit the group from engaging in political activity.
FOA executive director Jeremy Boreing says the group has been told outright by an IRS agent that it was on the “BOLO” — “be on the lookout for” — list: “I think the reason we’re being targeted is because we filed as a conservative education fellowship.”
Boering added that the IRS has asked the group for the names of its members and that FOA is not advocating anything — even from a Hollywood business point of view.
The IRS scandal, which was blown wide-open last year, involved the disproportionate targeting of conservative groups – namely, the Tea Party. Hollywood conservatives have long attempted to escape the wrath their liberal counterparts in Tinsel Town. Now, they’re apparently being scrutinized on a whole different level.
