Hot, dry winds about to blow in to Southern California

After a brief taste of precious rain, the Southland is expected to be bathed this weekend in sun and warm winds from the east — hallmarks of a Southern California fall.

That potential combination of strong winds and low humidity have forecasters issuing a fire weather watch for large portions of the region. The strong, offshore winds are expected to last from early Sunday morning to Monday evening, forecasters said.

A fire weather watch is issued when the combination of dry brush and weather conditions pose an extreme fire danger, according to the National Weather Service.

High temperatures are expected to reach 72 today and 77 degrees on Sunday. A high of 81 degrees is expected Monday.

Winds in the northeast portions of the county and Santa Ana Mountains are expected to be between 20 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts up to 65 miles per hour. The strongest winds are expected Sunday from the Cajon summit in San Bernardino County, through the northwest Inland Empire and into northeast Orange County.

Humidity is expected to be less than 10 percent.
