House Passes the Farm Bill…Without Food Stamps

The house narrowly passed a farm bill today. Not a single democrat voted for it and about a dozen republicans voted against it. The mean spirited old white women and black women in the party that has declared war on farmers are ready to have a cow. Before voting on the bill, the republicans separated the farm bill and food stamps.
Enrollment under the food stamp program has increased by 70% under Obama. I can’t understand that. I mean just because Obama has for five years, ignored the economy and jobs, so that he could concentrate on the big issues like gay marriage, rationing healthcare for granny, and building a national park on the moon, you would think the number would go down, now wouldn’t you?
The bill now goes to the senate and then possibly to a reconciliation committee. But not necessarily. Harry Reid could reject the bill out of hand based on the fact that Obama has promised to veto a bill that doesn’t include both. Let him. Then it can be on his shoulder or Harry’s and in 2014, when democratic candidates are running in agricultural states we can run endless commercials explaining how Obama and the democrats have declared war on the farmers.
The senate bill only cut 3% from the food stamp program. That was not enough. Rather than hold up the part of the bill they agreed on with the democrats, they opted to split it. The house should cut food stamps by 18% and settle for 8 or 9%. The republicans should have cut the farm bill by a lot, but I’ll save that for another column.
