Bangkok - Man held in death of JonBenet Ramsey

I'm a little shocked that they are searching overseas. Also, recall that Patricia Ramsey, JonBenet's mother recently died of cancer.

WASHINGTON - A man arrested in Thailand is being held in connection with the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, U.S. law enforcement officials said Wednesday.

Federal officials familiar with the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the man was being held in Bangkok on unrelated sex charges.

The girl was found beaten and strangled in the basement of the family's home in Boulder, Colo., on Dec. 26, 1996.

Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, officials in Washington said. They asked to remain anonymous pending an announcement in Colorado.

The girl's parents, Patsy and John Ramsey, had been under an "umbrella of suspicion" in JonBenet's death. The Ramseys said an intruder killed their daughter. A grand jury investigation in Boulder ended with no indictments, and no arrests had been made in the case.

    Patsy Ramsey died in July.

In 2003, U.S. District Judge Julie Carnes in Atlanta concluded that the evidence she reviewed suggested an intruder killed JonBenet. That opinion came with the judge's decision to dismiss a libel and slander lawsuit against the Ramseys by a freelance journalist, who the Ramseys had named as a suspect in their daughter's murder. The Boulder district attorney at the time said she agreed with Carnes' declaration.

I feel so ashamed, I blamed the family all along for this horiffic crime against JonBenet. I am so glad they have arrested this monster that could perpetrate the kinds of horrible things done to this child. I just heard on the news he, the monster, had been a second grade teacher. I am so sorry her mom didn't live to see him bought to justice, I guess though she is in a better place with her little girl! It might be a long time before I can forgive myself, for I was so adament in blaming this mother and father for her death. It has taught me the lesson that you should be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, unless you confess to a crime.

nitty, don't be so hard on yourself. I still think they are some what to blame, considering they advertised their child and dressed her provocatively.

I didn't blame the family......didn't wash with me. But I am sad that her mom died before the real culprit was brought to justice. I know they must have lived with that cloud of doubt over them all this time. It's enough to loose your child in such a tragic way....let alone have to deal with all that too.

Not saying she wasn't the first.......but I could slap senseless the chick than drove her car in that lake to kill her 2 boys. From that point on you were guilty until proven innocent and lord knows how many wasted hours and days were spent in future instances to make sure it wasn't the family first who did it.

Nothing ticks me off more than people who cry rape or abuse etc. and weren't.........coz from that point on the real victim becomes the criminal until proven otherwise. Each one of those struggles that were a step forward to justice were ruined by the first one to place a false claim.

That, to me, is one reason we have become so numb to things. That is one reason this illegal immigration thing has no sting anymore. Cards been pulled too many times for false reasons.

They still may have been involved. There still hasn't been enough information released yet.

I fail to see anything in this story that even suggests that the perpetrator was an illegal alien.
We may all dislike the attitude of illegals but we can not just go jumping to conclusions.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

It has nothing to do with illegal immigration, that is why it is posted in other topics.

Arrest Confirmed In JonBenet Ramsey Case
    UPDATED: 7:27 pm EDT August 16, 2006

DENVER -- Authorities confirmed Wednesday that a U.S. citizen has been arrested in Thailand in connection with the unsolved 1996 slaying of JonBenet Ramsey.
Federal officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Associated Press that John Mark Karr, 42, was arrested Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. (EDT) in Bangkok, Thailand, where he's being held on unrelated sex charges. Boulder, Colo., District Attorney Mary Lacy confirmed the arrest, which she called the result of a "focused and complex investigation," but did not confirm details about the suspect.
The Rocky Mountain News reported that the suspect is a schoolteacher who is originally from Conyers, Ga. It was not immediately clear whether the suspect had a connection to the Ramsey family, who currently live in Georgia.
Law enforcement officials from Boulder were flying to Bangkok to present Thai authorities with documents in the slaying of the 6-year-old beauty pageant contestant, officials in Washington told The Associated Press.
MSNBC -- citing a Denver television station -- reported that the suspect apparently made a confession regarding certain parts of the crime and will return to the United States within the next two days along with an investigator from the Boulder District Attorney's Office.
In a telephone statement delivered from his Denver office to KMGH-TV, Haddon confirmed the arrest.
"The diligent investigation of JonBenet Ramsey's murder by Boulder D.A. Lacy and detectives working with her has been extraordinary," Haddon told the station. "It is hoped this arrest will bring some closure to the Ramsey family after a 10-year ordeal. We respect the legal process and will have no further comment until the legal process is concluded.".
The District Attorney's Office in Boulder said they would hold a news conference Thursday regarding the arrest.
In her statement, Lacy said the suspect was arrested on Wednesday morning. She also said that JonBenet's father, John Ramsey, was aware of the arrest and had been briefed throughout the investigation.
Boulder police did not immediately comment on the case.
JonBenet's battered body was found in the basement of her parents' Boulder home on Dec. 26, 1996. Her death has remained unsolved for almost 10 years.
Patsy Ramsey, JonBenet's mother, died in June of ovarian cancer. John Ramsey said in a public statement Wednesday that his wife knew authorities "were close to making an arrest" before she died.
Patsy Ramsey always maintained that she found a ransom note on a back staircase demanding $118,000 for her daughter's return. John Ramsey said he discovered the body in the basement eight hours later.
A grand jury investigated the case but returned with no indictments. In December 2003, after investigators obtained a new DNA sample, a federal judge in Atlanta concluded that the evidence suggested an intruder killed JonBenet.
JonBenet and Patsy are both buried in Cobb County, Ga
