Hawaii Lawmakers Back the Creation of 'Islam Day'

Hawaii lawmakers back the creation of 'Islam Day'

    By MARK NIESSE

HONOLULU (AP) -- Hawaii's state Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill to celebrate "Islam Day" - over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote Wednesday. It previously passed the House.

The measure now goes to the governor.

The bill seeks to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions" that Islam and the Islamic world have made.

But the Senate's two Republicans argued that radical Islamists cheered the 9/11 attacks. They also noted that other religions didn't have a special day honored.

The lone Democrat voting in dissent opposed it on church-state separation fears.

Hawaii Lawmakers Pass Bill to Create 'Islam Day'

HONOLULU -- Hawaii's state Senate overwhelmingly approved a bill Wednesday to celebrate "Islam Day" -- over the objections of a few lawmakers who said they didn't want to honor a religion connected to Sept. 11, 2001.

The Senate's two Republicans argued that a minority of Islamic extremists have killed many innocents in terrorist attacks.

"I recall radical Islamists around the world cheering the horrors of 9/11. That is the day all civilized people of all religions should remember," said Republican Sen. Fred Hemmings to the applause of more than 100 people gathered in the Senate to oppose a separate issue -- same-sex civil unions.

The resolution to proclaim Sept. 24, 2009, as Islam Day passed the Senate on a 22-3 vote. It had previously passed the House and now goes to Republican Gov. Linda Lingle.

The bill seeks to recognize "the rich religious, scientific, cultural and artistic contributions" that Islam and the Islamic world have made. It does not call for any spending or organized celebration of Islam Day.

"We are a state of tolerance. We understand that people have different beliefs," said Sen. Will Espero, a Democrat. "We may not all agree on every single item and issue out there, but to say and highlight the negativity of the Islamic people is an insult to the majority" of believers "who are good law-abiding citizens of the world."

But Republican Sen. Sam Slom argued that the United States has become too sympathetic toward Islamic extremists.

"I don't think there's any country in the history of the world that has been more tolerant than the United States of America, and because of that tolerance, we've looked the other way a lot of times, and many thousands of our citizens have been killed by terrorists," said Slom, a Republican.

The lone Democrat voting against the bill opposed it on church-state separation fears.

What contributions? I only remeber 1 huge one and that was 9/11. It is so wrong to set aside a special day to honor Islamists. America was founded on Christian principles, not Islam.

Advances in medicine, mathematics, horticulture, and astronomy came from the Arab world. There's nothing wrong with acknowledging those contributions, but there is something idiotic about breaking down our separation of church and state.

If Hawaii lawmakers can come up with an "Islam Day", then why don't these same Hawaii lawmakers also come up with an "Obama-born-in-Hawaii Day"?

    1. Do you know why the Hawaii legislature doesn't dare to come up with such a day honoring President Obama as easily as it has come up with the recent strange "lslam Day"?

    2. The reason is this: The lawmakers have no definite proof that Obama was even born in Hawaii.

    3. And if the Hawaii legislature dares to try to pass a bill proclaiming an "Obama-born-in-Hawaii Day"---say, Aug. 4, the day Obama claims that he was born in Hawaii--- such action will be dangerous because it could open a Pandora's box, that is, people throughout the country will scream to see proof that Obama was indeed born in Hawaii. They will demand to know if any of the Hawaii lawmakers have personally seen Obama's long form Hawaii birth certificate and Obama's birth hospital records.

    4. So, as I see it, it will be a very long time before Hawaii lawmakers attempt to pass a bill declaring an "Obama-born-in-Hawaii Day" out of fear that during an in-depth investigation of Obama's background, investigators will find out that Obama was not born in Hawaii afterall.
