Ignore the grouchy Fauci: Vaccinated Americans are living their lives again

It continued with 80,000 Badgers fans dancing to “Jump Around” in Madison, Wisconsin, on Saturday. And it ended with 79,000 Seminole fans doing the "Tomahawk Chop" in Tallahassee, Florida, on Sunday.

It was a weekendlong celebration of American perseverance and community. One of the nation’s oldest and most popular sports, college football, is back — and with nary a mask in sight.

For many on the Left, these images were too much to bear. Former President Bill Clinton’s press secretary Joe Lockhart whined on Twitter, “Dozens of college football games on TV yesterday with 100s of thousands fans in the stadium and not one word about Covid risk, vaccines or masks. It's the latest example of how we don't take Covid seriously and the sports media turning a blind eye for profit.”
Asked by CNN if he approved of all the packed stadiums this weekend, President Joe Biden’s chief medical adviser, Dr. Anthony Fauci, said, “I don’t think it is smart.”
Don’t listen to these and the many other Faucis and Lockharts.
Each of the big stadiums mentioned above, and many more throughout college football, required people in the crowd to be vaccinated. The risk from COVID-19 if vaccinated is not zero. By some estimates, vaccinated people have only a 1 in 5,000 chance of catching COVID-19 each day. Even if a vaccinated person does catch COVID-19, symptoms are likely to be similar to a mild case of the flu.
COVID-19 will not be fully defeated in the foreseeable future. It is going to become what epidemiologists call “endemic,” meaning it will linger in the population. That doesn’t mean we need to change our lives and our traditions permanently. We have vaccines that have proven effective at managing the virus, and medical science will continue to develop more and better vaccines and treatments.
“It is really important that we convey that success does not equal no cases,” Surgeon General Vivek Murthy recently said. “Success looks like very few people in the hospital and very few dying.”
COVID-19 is now only a threat to the unvaccinated. Ideally, everyone would become protected. But for whatever reason, whether it be previously compromised immune systems or merely personal choice, not everyone will get vaccinated. And COVID-19 will most likely change how these people live. But that is no reason the rest of us, who are vaccinated, can’t live our lives like we did before the pandemic.
So get vaccinated. Live your life. And go to as many football games, concerts, marches, and church services as you want to.
