An American arrested three weeks ago on terrorism charges has been released from jail, the police said today.

Cynthia McNamara was freed Monday night on orders from a court in Ayacucho, the Peruvian police said. It was unclear today on what grounds the judge there ordered her release. [ According to Reuters, friends said she flew to Shannon, Ireland, after her release and from there planned to go to London. They said she made no mention of any plans to return to the United States. ] Originally from Philadelphia, she was arrested on Dec. 5 in Ayacucho in connection with an August, 1987, terrorist attack by Maoist guerrillas.

She was held in a Lima prison until April 26, when a court cleared her on charges related to the attack, in which two people died. She was again arrested in Lima on Aug. 2, on a warrant issued in Ayacucho.
