    WD Delivers the Personal Cloud

    27 Sep 2011 / 9:00am / By Joy Hou
With WD My Book Live Network Drives and WD2go Apps Consumers Can Easily Access and Share All Files From PCs, Macs, Tablets and Smartphones Without Monthly Fees or Security Concerns

SINGAPORE - Western Digital introduced its WD 2go and WD 2go Pro mobile apps for its My Book Live personal cloud storage solution. WD’s My Book Live drive connects to the home network creating shared storage that users can access within and outside the home. Secure remote access to the My Book Live is available on any computer through www.WD2go.com, while the WD 2go apps provide mobile access to files stored on the drive using an iPad, iPhone, iPod touch or Android compatible mobile device.

Combining the benefits of both public and private cloud solutions, My Book Live personal cloud storage allows users to keep media and files safe at home on their own physical drive and yet access them over the Internet with any PC or Mac computer or on tablets and smartphones through WD’s mobile apps. Using My Book Live, users can share files, stream media, and access content anywhere with no monthly fees and secure in the knowledge that their data resides in their own home under their exclusive control. In addition, the WD 2go Pro app enables private sharing of files with friends, family and colleagues. Almost any file can be shared, from pictures and personal videos to work documents and presentations.
WD 2go web access marks WD’s second generation of remote access technologies that leverage a peer-to-peer connection between the My Book Live and remote PCs or mobile devices to maximize the speed and throughput.
The WD 2go apps add to WD’s vision of providing secure storage and access to digital content on any screen, on-the-go or at home. The app supports a variety of media file formats for streaming movies and music or accessing files such as Microsoft Office documents. In addition to all of the features currently available in the free WD 2go app, the WD 2go Pro app includes several advanced features, including:

    • Clipping: Users can clip files, photos, songs, videos or folders to download a copy from the My Book Live drive to a mobile device, enabling subsequent access even without an Internet connection.
    • Automatic sync: New or modified files added to the My Book Live automatically sync to mobile devices.
    • Content sharing: The WD 2go Pro app allows users to email files, share files as a link, print and open files with third party apps.
    • Additional security: Users can leverage an additional layer of security by locking mobile access to the My Book Live drive with a 4 digit pass code.

In addition to remote and mobile access to the personal cloud, WD’s My Book Live features a built-in media server that streams music, photos and movies to any DLNA-certified multimedia device such as a WD TV Live network media player, Blu-ray Disc player, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and connected TV.
    Capacity and Compatibility

My Book Live personal cloud storage is available in capacities of 1 TB, 2 TB and 3 TB and is compatible with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X Leopard, Snow Leopard, or Lion, as well as DLNA/UPnP enabled devices.
    Price and Availability

WD 2go (free download) and WD 2go Pro ($2.99 USD) are currently available for download from the iTunes Store and Android Market. My Book Live personal cloud storage is available at selected retailers and resellers and is distributed by Achieva Technology Pte Ltd and SiS Technology Pte Ltd in Singapore. MSRP is S$ 209 for 1 TB, S$ 239 for the 2 TB, and S$ 299 for 3 TB.

    HOSTS file

Your HOSTS file is ONE layer of protection, blocking access to ad, tracking, and other malicious websites.

Here are the hpHosts classifications (ads, malware, exploits).

    Downloads:
    the hpHosts file for Windows, Linux, or Mac OS;
    the hpHosts file installer for Windows;
two lists of Yahoo! servers, for those who wish to block them*; and
the hpHosts readme file, for those who are so inclined.

An up-to-date HOSTS files is only one part of Internet security, but it does keep you from stumbling into or accessing thousands of websites that you will want to avoid.

    * Though you will probably want to block all of the Yahoo! ad servers, the larger list of Yahoo! servers requires personal attention. There are many sites on this second list that you probably will not want to block, such as:

    127.0.0.1 360.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 login.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 mail.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 maps.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 messenger.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 mobile.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 my.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 news.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 photos.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 privacy.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 profiles.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 search.shopping.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 search.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 shopping.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 sports.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 tech.groups.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 tech.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 toolbar.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 tv.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 us.a1.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.a2.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.f577.mail.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 us.maps2.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.news1.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.news2.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.news3.yimg.com
    127.0.0.1 us.rd.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 video.search.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 video.yahoo.com
    127.0.0.1 widgets.yahoo.com

If you do an automated merge of the HOSTS file and the Yahoo! servers file, you will need to edit the HOSTS file afterwards and remove some (or all) of the above lines, as you see fit.

Remember to uncheck "Read only" in Properties for the HOSTS file before you edit it, then recheck "Read only" when you finish.

One man's terrorist is another man's undocumented worker.

Unless we enforce laws against illegal aliens today,
tomorrow WE may wake up as illegals.

The last word: illegal aliens are ILLEGAL!

A Major Step Forward in Better Protecting Federal, State and Local Cyber Networks

    August 13, 2013
    5:31 pm

    Suzanne Spaulding
    Deputy Under Secretary

This week, DHS achieved an important milestone towards better protecting government networks from cyber attacks. The General Services Administration yesterday announced a contract award that will allow government agencies to partner with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to deploy Continuous Diagnostics and Mitigation (CDM) technology that will enhance the security and resilience of their networks – better safeguarding both the sensitive data on those networks and the critical functions they provide to all Americans.

Through the CDM program, DHS works with partners across the entire Federal executive branch civilian government to deploy and maintain an array of sensors for hardware asset management, software asset management and whitelisting, vulnerability management, compliance setting management and feed data about an agency’s cybersecurity flaws and present those risks in an automated and continuously-updated dashboard. CDM, which will also be available for state and local entities as well as the defense industrial base sector, provides our stakeholders with the tools they need protect their networks and enhance their ability to see and counteract day-to-day cyber threats.

Whether to receive important health or emergency information or to check on the provision of essential government services, millions of Americans visit government websites every day. While increased connectivity has transformed and improved access to government, it also has increased the importance and complexity of our shared risk. The growing number of cyber attacks on Federal government networks is growing more sophisticated, aggressive, and dynamic.

Government computer networks and systems contain information on national security, law enforcement, and other sensitive data, including information about federal employees and others. It is paramount that the government protects this information from theft and protects networks and systems from attacks while continually providing essential services to the public. As the department responsible for securing unclassified federal civilian government networks—the “dot-gov” domain—DHS coordinates the national response to significant cyber incidents and maintains a common operational picture for cyberspace across the government. Part of that responsibility includes network intrusion detection and prevention technology under a program known as Einstein. When both programs are implemented, they will provide complementary protections across the dot-gov domain, further protecting the government’s infrastructure and the nation’s data.
Under the CDM program, participating departments and agencies will be able to enhance their cybersecurity assessments by implementing automated network sensor capacity and prioritizing risk alerts. Results will feed into agency-level dashboards that produce customized reports that alert information technology managers to the most critical cyber risks, enabling them to readily identify which network security issues to address first, thus enhancing the overall security posture of agency networks. Summary information from participating agencies will feed into a central Federal-level dashboard, managed by DHS’ National Cybersecurity Communication and Integration Center, to inform and prioritize cyber risk assessments across the Federal enterprise and support common operational pictures that provide cybersecurity situational awareness to our stakeholders.

The CDM program will strengthen cybersecurity across the “dot-gov” domain, improve our cybersecurity posture, and enhance other critical cybersecurity capabilities to thwart advanced, persistent cyber threats in a dynamic threat environment.

DHS has partnered with the General Services Administration to award a multi-vendor, five-year blanket purchase agreement contract for the CDM program, that will provide real-time diagnostic and mitigation services to federal executive branch civilian agencies, state and local entities, and the defense industrial base sector. The BPA is an overarching contract with an estimated ceiling of $6 billion over its five year duration (one-year contract with four additional one-year options) and is open to all Federal civilian departments and agencies, the defense industrial base sector, as well as state, local, tribal, and territorial governments.

This significant contract award is designed to support Federal civilian networks and the extensive number of cybersecurity requirements for any Federal custom and cloud application over the life of the contract, and will be funded through each participating department and agency, not solely by DHS.

Google: Gmail users have no expectation of privacy

    James Martin/CNET

Google has made it clear that people who send or receive email via Gmail should not expect their messages to remain private.

In a 39-page motion filed in June (see below) to have a class-action data-mining lawsuit dismissed, the Web giant cites Smith v. Maryland, a 1979 Supreme Court decision that upheld the collection of electronic communications without a warrant.

"Just as a sender of a letter to a business colleague cannot be surprised that the recipient's assistant opens the letter, people who use web-based email today cannot be surprised if their emails are processed by the recipient's [email provider] in the course of delivery. Indeed, 'a person has no legitimate expectation of privacy in information he voluntarily turns over to third parties.'"

Plaintiffs in the case contend that Google's automated scanning of email represents an illegal interception of their electronic communications without their consent. However, Google, which uses automated scanning to filter spam and deliver targeted advertising to its users, noted that plaintiffs consented to the practice in exchange for the email services. Google goes on to say that courts have held that all email users "necessarily give implied consent to the automated processing of their emails."

Public interest group Consumer Watchdog called the statement a "stunning admission" and warned people who cared about their privacy not to use Google's email service.

"Google's brief uses a wrong-headed analogy; sending an email is like giving a letter to the Post Office," John M. Simpson, Consumer Watchdog's Privacy Project director, said in a statement today. "I expect the Post Office to deliver the letter based on the address written on the envelope. I don't expect the mail carrier to open my letter and read it. Similarly when I send an email, I expect it to be delivered to the intended recipient with a Gmail account based on the email address; why would I expect its content will be intercepted by Google and read?"
Google has not responded to CNET's request for comment.

Upon its introduction in 2004, Gmail was immediately slammed by lawmakers and privacy advocates alike as a horrific invasion into Internet users' privacy. Critics contended that it should be illegal for a company to scan the text of its customers' email correspondence and display relevant advertising.

In a previous statement to CNET, Google has defended its handling of email customers' data.

"We work hard to make sure that ads are safe, unobtrusive and relevant," the company said earlier this year. "No humans read your email or Google account information in order to show you advertisements or related information."

Seizing upon privacy concerns, Microsoft launched a campaign against Google last year that urges consumers to dump the service for its own Outlook.com. Microsoft asserts its email service automatically scans the contents of users' emails only to prevent spam, malware, and other unwanted activity.

Email users' privacy has taken on greater attention with the case of Snowden, who is wanted by the U.S. for leaking top-secret documents to the media about the NSA's surveillance practices. Rather than possibly compromise its customers' privacy, an encrypted email service linked to Snowdenshut down last week. Saying it could "see the writing on the wall," another encrypted email service shut down within hours.

Justdelete.me Wants To Help You Pull The Plug On All Those Pesky Online Accounts
    http://techcrunch.com/2013/08/23/jus...line-accounts/

It’s tiring, isn’t it? Doing everything online, I mean. Everyday you log into services tailor-made for shopping, searching, sharing, watching, chatting, curating, reading, bragging — that’s a lot of places to keep your personal information, and no one could blame you if you wanted to try to pare down on those extraneous connections. Hell, I’d like nothing better myself sometimes.
A U.K.-based duo consisting of developer Robb Lewis and designer Ed Poole seem to understand that desire awfully well, and they teamed up to create what may be a truly indispensable resource. It’s called Justdelete.me, and as the name sort of implies, it’s a directory of links to pages where you can lay waste to your myriad online accounts.
It’s a deceptively simple resource. You’re greeted with a sizable grid that points you to a slew of popular web services that you probably use. More specifically, those links point you straight at the pages where you can deactivate all those pesky accounts… or at least where you can try. Thankfully, Lewis has done the due diligence to figure out which services can be disconnected from painlessly and which ones require you to (ugh) actually communicate with someone to get the job done.
A disconcerting number of sites and services fall into that latter category. Of the ones that Lewis has added, 10 won’t let you kill your account without first talking to a customer service rep, and 4 (Netflix, Steam, Starbucks, and WordPress) don’t seem to let you delete your accounts at all. Of course, it’s in these companies’ best interests to keep the account deletion process as obtuse (one might say dark) as possible. The less progress you make on that front, the more likely you are to say “screw it” and remain in their clutches.
As useful as the site can be for people looking to disconnect sans headaches, it’s far from being a complete compendium. Lewis notes on his blog that Justdelete.me is very much a work-in-progress — he’ll gladly accept suggestions for services that people think should be on the list, and here’s hoping this thing continues to pick up steam.
