Raise Rates Soon or Face Inflation Disaster, Experts Warn

    Thursday, May 14, 2009 2:16 PM

    By: Dan Weil

It could be argued that the Fed action staved off a much wider collapse, but economists are beginning to wonder — at what future cost? Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies before the Joint Economic Committee on Capitol Hill. (Win McNamee/Getty Images)

Fed watchers and even some members of the central bank itself are beginning to clamor for a move away from virtually zero interest rates.

They fear an inflation inferno is boiling just below the incipient economic recovery.

The Fed slashed rates and pumped hundreds of billions of dollars into financial markets to keep them from freezing in panic over bank losses. Since then, the level of risk the banks face has become clearer, but rates have stayed very low.

It could be argued that the Fed action staved off a much wider collapse, but economists are beginning to wonder — at what future cost?

“My calculation implies we may not have as much time before the Fed has to remove excess reserves and raise the rate,â€

Rogers: About Time for Dollar Crisis to Start

    Thursday, May 14, 2009 11:50 AM

    By: Julie Crawshaw

The dollar's rally is set to end in a "currency crisis," according to investing guru Jim Rogers, who also says he may bet on a slide in equities after nine weeks of gains.

“We’re going to have a currency crisis, probably this fall or the fall of 2010,â€

Jim Rogers, who has always hit the nail on the head, forgot to mention the most important investment of all: WATER.
And why does it cost $1.36 to buy one €? Why are Russia and China so eager for a new world reserve currency besides the dollar when China owns well over 40 percent of US treasury obligations (on which, we the responsible taxpayers and future generations, are paying interest)?
The dollar has been debased with the removal of the gold and silver standards and has done fine in float against other currencies, until now.
If there will be a mass famine, gold, silver and other commodities aren't going to be worth too much.

Maybe time to stock up on dried and canned foods. Freeze dried meats can be re hydrated for use. As well, did you know that there are sites that sell all sorts of freeze dried foods, including butter, margarine and shortening?

I did think about slowly ordering stuff for future times when it would be needed. As well, I have a food dehydrator and here in Oregon, access to lots of local produce.

Here is one site I found, and this has a lot of stuff on it. However, be warned about prices. If you look at this to buy, think twice about what you could get locally in quantity, dried foods, you will probably find it cheaper. Some items are odd and cannot be found other than site for companies like this.

You can also make your own dehydrated meats at home by soaking any meat in a soy sauce marinade, and using a dehydrator. It would be wise to find a local source or from the above site, some "moisture" packs to insert in with the dehydrated meats and then seal in airtight baggies (maybe using a "Food Saver"). Even fish can be done.

Seal and add those moisture packs to all dehydrated food as they will begin to regain moisture from the air if not.

I am not any kind of a survivalist, but am not against people planning ahead and having things stored up for whatever might come (even natural disasters).

As for there being "food shortages", I think this is sort of strange to hear, as we all have some sort of ability to fish in nearby rivers or lakes and also can tap into the ability to hunt should hunger make us think gutting an animal seems less gross when you are starving. A food shortage would mean that all fish and wildlife have died and all plant life has ceased to exist, THEN we WILL find we have a problem.

We have stopped understanding our own abilities to be self-sufficient to the degree of thinking if we had no money, we would be hungry and without shelter. All you need is a clean source of water, rough timber, maybe mud to pack into the timber, and fire along with some basic tools to hunt and such with and we can survive in that way if necessary.
