https://www.alipac.us/image/png;base...AASUVORK5CYII=Last week, the president of the United States delivered a bizarre address in support of the so-called “For the People Act,” which presumes to take away the discretion of state legislatures over elections in their states. President Joe Biden described as “vicious” the recent voting laws passed in Georgia and Texas, saying they were meant to “intimidate poll workers.” The president condemned the proposed laws of these two states as “21st-century Jim Crow.”

Frankly, this is a call to violence against elected officials if Democrats' political goals are not accepted. In the context of the riots in cities this past year, this speech seeks to legitimize the arson, assaults on police, and destruction of property we have just experienced.
These are fighting words in Virginia, which long ago abandoned laws designed to prevent African Americans from voting. Virginians have embraced our black citizens, voting for the nation's first elected African American governor. As attorney general of Virginia, I stood with fellow attorneys general of the South to stop arson attacks on African American churches. Virginians of today will not take lightly being accused of racism in the conduct of our public affairs.
Biden went on to describe the fight over the For the People Act as a struggle between “democracy or autocracy.” Autocracy is defined as the control of a country by one person. So is he asserting that his political opponents seek to deliver our republic into the hands of one person?
He went on to condemn his opponents as “peddlers of lies.”
All this is bad enough, but then Biden said his duty was to stop “enemies foreign and domestic,” with his emphasis on the word “domestic.” This statement went beyond the insults and became a threat. Biden was telling his audience, including a television audience, that his political opponents are “domestic enemies.”
When I represented the U.S. at the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe in Vienna, Austria, I defended our country by confronting our “foreign enemies,” although I preferred the term “adversaries.” I never thought I would hear my president characterize me, or any other political opponent, as a “domestic enemy.”
As the immediate past ambassador to the OSCE, I was an advocate for human rights and democracy. The OSCE is a large international organization with some member countries that do not have a long commitment to fair and honest elections.
Clearly, the fight for free and honest elections must be the touchstone of freedom. This is especially true in the beacon of liberty in the world. Elections must be honest and also believed to be honest by the citizens participating in the election. The elected legislatures of several states in the U.S. are enacting measures to ensure voter integrity and to reassure their citizens that elections conducted in their states are honest.
This kind of conduct by the president must be watched closely and assessed carefully. These kinds of threats and insults must be rejected. Divisions within society are being fostered for political advantage. In this time of division, threats and calls to violence by our president are not acceptable.
