Kansas Workplace Shooting Leaves Several Dead, Up to 20 Wounded

Several people were killed and up to 20 wounded in a shooting at a Kansas workplace Thursday evening, authorities said.

The shooter, an employee at Excel Industries, where the shooting happened, was killed by police, Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton said in a press conference Thursday.

According to the sheriff, there were possibly 3-4 others dead, in addition to the shooter.

Via Christi St. Francis hospital in Wichita said it was expecting six patients, ABC affiliate KAKE reported.

Two people are in serious condition, while one victim is in fair condition and another is being assessed. Two more victims are en route to the hospital.

Workers at Excel Industries, a manufacturer of heavy duty lawn care equipment, in Hesston, were instructed to meet in another building for a head count.

There were numerous crime scene in the area, Walton said.

Nearby Hesston college was put on lockdown during the shooting, the school said on its website. There were about 375 students and faculty on campus at the time of the lockdown, KAKE reported.

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback and Wichita police offered condolences to the victims on Twitter.

Authorities: 4 To 7 Dead In Shooting At Hesston, Kansas Business

HESSTON, Kan. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Authorities said four to seven people were killed late Thursday in a shooting at a business in south-central Kansas that makes lawn mower products.

As CBS affiliate KWCH-TV, Wichita reported, Harvey County Sheriff T Walton said it’s possible that as four to seven people people were killed and 20 injured in the shooting.

A Harvey County sheriff’s dispatcher says the shooting occurred Thursday afternoon at Excel Industries in Hesston. The dispatcher, who would not give her name, said authorities were still at the scene Thursday evening.

Walton said the shooter was an employee and was killed by authorities, KWCH reported. As of 6:45 p.m. Central time — 7:45 p.m. in New York — Walton said the scene at Excel Industries had been secured, however authorities said at a press conference that there were “a number of crime scenes involved.”

Hesston is a community of about 3,700 residents about 35 miles north of Wichita.

Hesston College, which is located near the scene of the shooting, was locked down on Thursday night. The school has about 450 students and is affiliated with the Mennonite Church USA.

Excel Industries was awarded the Governor’s Exporter of the Year award in 2013 from the Kansas Department of Commerce. The company manufactures Hustler and Big Dog mowing equipment and was founded in Hesston in 1960.

Update: Multiple eyewitnesses and employees at Excel Industries identify the shooter as Cedric Ford, 38, an employee at the company in Hesston. Ford was listed as living in Newton.


Excel Industries shooter identified

His Facebook page says he was a painter at Excel.

We have pulled pictures and video that were posted on Ford's Facebook page. The photo shows him holding at least two guns and the video show him shooting what appears to be an assault rifle.

We know that Ford had criminal history out of Broward and Miramar counties in Florida from 1997-2000.

We are working to gather more information and will bring it to you as it becomes available.

Update: Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton says 4-7 people, including the shooter at Excel Industries in Hesston have been killed. Walton said the shooter was an employee, and he was killed by authorities.

Walton said as many three people were killed. As many as 20 people were hurt. Walton said there are four to five crime scenes in this case.

More information is expected at the next briefing at 9 p.m.

In Wichita, Via Chrisiti St. Francis says it is treating five patients from the shooting in serious condition and two in fair condition. Four patients are being treated at Newton Medical Center and three at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita.

Update: Eyewitness News has confirmed that a suspect in a deadly shooting at Excel Industries, 200 S. Ridge Road, in Hesston is down.

Hesston police confirm a shooting at Excel Industries in the 200 block of South Ridge Road in Hesston. Dispatchers say two people were killed and multiple others are hurt. The shooting was reported a little after 5 p.m. Thursday.

ATF agents are headed to Hesston and a medical helicopter has landed near the scene.

At about 5:50 p.m., a spokesman with Via Christi in Wichita confirmed three patients from Excel Industries were taken to St. Francis hospital in Wichita with three more on the way. Officials say two people at St. Francis are in serious condition and one is in fair condition. One patient is being assessed and two are on the way to the hospital.

Wesley Medical Center is treating three patients from the shooting.

Hesston College is placed on lockdown.

We are continuing to look into a separate shooting reported at 12th and Meridian in Newton where one person was shot and whether that incident could be connected to the shooting at Excel Industries.

Witnesses have described a suspect vehicle as a gray and red pickup truck. A little before 5:30 p.m., dispatchers indicated a suspect had been disabled. We are working to confirm this information.

Shortly after the shooting, Eyewitness News spoke with a woman from Mid Kansas Family Practice near Excel Industries. The woman said an injured woman ran to the facility from Excel for help and the office was locked down. The woman at Mid Kansas Family Practice did not confirm if the woman from Excel had been shot.
