Latino teen lives her dream in North Carolina.

    Latino teen lives her dream

[quote] ASHEBORO — When she was in the sixth grade, Brenda Lopez used to come home from school and cry.

Accustomed to being tops in her class in her native Mexico, Lopez was struggling with studies in the United States — and for good reason: She could neither speak nor understand English.

By the time she graduated from Southwestern Randolph High School in 2007 , Lopez had made up a lot of ground, posting a 4.25 gradepoint average and rising to rank among the top 30 or so students in her class.

Today, she speaks elegant, accented English and attends Randolph Community College, where she is one of four RCC Foundation ambassadors — students selected to represent RCC on campus, in the community and on visits to area schools. She plans to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree and then to apply for dental school.

Lopez is living the American dream, the possibilities of her future seemingly limited by nothing but a willingness to work for what she wants.

Such potential stands in stark contrast to what her life might be like. She returned to Mexico for three weeks this summer, where she saw relatives, friends, the old hometown where she grew up, and the realities of her homeland. Her mother and two younger sisters went, too.

“I told my mother, ‘Thank you for taking me to the United States because if I had been here, I would probably be married or I would not be in school,’â€

In February of her senior year, she received her green card, a card that identifies her as an alien (someone who is not a U.S. national) with legal permanent residency status. She can apply for citizenship five years from the date of getting her green card.
She is not a citizen, school systems!

So now legal permanent residency status gives you in-state cost of college and scholarship funding at taxpayers expense?

Motivation to go to college was inspired when she watched as fellow students at Southwestern Randolph planned to continue their education after high school. Teachers encouraged her, too, with teachers in different disciplines suggesting that she pursue a career in their field because she had excelled in their class.

But they did not know that Lopez was undocumented.
What about the North Carolina State/ United State Citizens?

So there was no doubt that she was documented by anyone in the School System? Odd? Special classes for English, still didn't have any doubt?

Come on North Carolina School Systems and North Carolina State Government, who are you fooling, now?

Chain Immigration! Will continue on and on legal and illegal.

We don’t come here to try to take something away.
That free education is something you have to do here. It doesn't matter if you took away an America citizens dream of have a higher education. Why not you're only bettering you're self right, that makes it ok. So what if Americans paid for your education it's all about you right!

We just want something to eat, a job,
Funny I was just down there it didn't look like anyone was starving to me.
I'm so tried of these people thinking steeling American jobs, tax funded educations, taxpayer free this and that is ok because they're only doing it to better themselves. What's even worse is news papers print this crap>

posted a comment. Too bad the NC media insists on shoving the positive spin down our throats, even though we are VOCALLY opposed to this. I email my Senators almost daily, they must be sick of me by now...LOL!

okay, now you need to explain to me how you view any comments left at the link! I looked and looked and couldn't find a way to view them .

I posted to the article, too. You and I know our posts will not get posted.

Hope you got my PM, I thought you were wanting to know how to read post here. Sorry for the mix-up.

And I thought the post in the Courier-Tribune would come up automatically, but that didn't happen. So I guess it is a truly major screening process. Don't hurt an illegal criminal alien's feeling process.

Although they do not say so right off by the time you get to the end it is as you suspect a pro illegal alien puff piece. There is very little use of any actual fact the American worker or tax payer in it instead it is an attempt to politically influence the ignorant reader misrepresented as news.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

Personally, I am getting really sick and tired of reading this pro-illegal garbage, which means the powers that be at the newspaper are pro-big business and anti-American. And if the girl thanks her mother for bringing her to this country, this kid came here illegally. So she is a gifted student, take your gifts and go back home and contribute to your country. You have cost the American people enough with the ESL programs, etc. And don't tell me you have forgotten your Spanish!!!!

This young lady wasn't completely catered to in the school system as they are in just about every border state, and this just shows how much better TOTAL IMMERSION is for the student, rather than bringing everyone else down a couple of notches to make little Jose or Juana "not feel so inept."

In California they've decided to "level the playing field" by making all kids feel "equally inept" by forcing non-Spanish speaking children to speak Spanish. Then EVERYONE gets to feel completely stupid all at the same time!! Isn't Socialism wonderful?

For every story that warms your heart like this one, there are about a million hispanic drop outs who are in gangs or in the parking lot at Home Depot. We see stories like this and are tempted to think, "Welll this is a smart girl. I respect her hard work and goals in life." The thing is, this girl's story represents about 1/1000th of those who have come looking for the "American dream." Just because she will not be a drain on American society does not mean that the other 999 won't be!

I really hope that enormous pressure is increasingly put on Mexico to improve opportunities for students THERE.
