Nine people reported wounded in shooting in D.C. shooting
By Martin Weil and Clarence Williams
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, March 30, 2010; 10:05 PM
Nine people were reported wounded Tuesday night in an outbreak of gunfire on a street near the southern tip of the District of Columbia, police said.
A tenth person was found shot several blocks away, but police said they were unsure whether that victim was involved in the other outbreak of violence.
A spokesman for the D.C. fire and emergency services department said it was believed that one of those wounded had died, but police declined to confirm that account. Several others were in critical or serious condition, authorities said.
Two D.C. police cars crashed on St. Barnabas Road in Prince George's County during a pursuit that followed the shootings. Four officers suffered what appeared to be minor injuries, according to D.C. police chief Cathy L. Lanier.
Lanier said the victims were hit in the 4000 block of South Capitol Street as a gunman "was spraying" bullets "into a crowd" gathered there.
No motive could immediately be learned for the shootings.
The police chase went into Prince George's County, and then back into the District. Three people were taken into custody after the chase, police said.
The incident appeared to be one of the most violent in the Washington area in months. The District, once known as the nation's homicide capital, logged 143 homicides last year, the fewest killings in nearly 50 years.

The trend is continuing. As of Monday afternoon, D.C. police reported 20 homicides this year, compared with 31 through the same period in 2009.
Rescue workers sent to the site of the original incident, near Bolling Air Force Base, and the Blue Plains sewage treatment plant, found a "very chaotic situation," said fire and rescue spokesman Pete Piringer.
The victims included both men and women, according to authorities. One was described as a teenager, the others in their 20s or 30s.
At about the same time as the South Capitol Street shootings, authorities found someone several blocks away on Galveston Street, also suffering from a gunshot wound. Investigators were trying to determine whether that victim had also been hit at South Capitol Street.
Officers as well as rescue workers flooded into the area of the shooting, between Atlantic and Brandywine Streets, within a few minutes of the first calls about the incident.
Police began pursuing a van from the scene, and, aided by a helicopter, continued the pursuit to the Condon Terrace neighborhood of Southeast Washington. The three people taken into custody Tuesday night were picked up there, Lanier said.
It was not clear Tuesday night why the gunshot victims had congregated in the block where they were hit, but the area was described as a popular gathering place.
A woman reached in one of the two story red brick apartment houses that line one side of the street said she had heard gunfire.
There was "a lot" of shooting, she said.
Ruben Castaneda contributed to this report.

What in the world!! Terrible. And that certainly isn't much news coverage over such a shooting rampage is it? Nothing on Fox today that I saw. Bizarre.

CNN
. . .Lanier decline to give more details, saying it was too early in the investigation.
However, she told reporters that, "We've made a lot of progress to stop gang retaliation and violence and, in the end, if this ends up being some kind of gang retaliation then shame on all of us."NO AMNESTY

Oh thank you so much JohnDoe2 for the additional articles. I wonder what it was about? They're hinting at gang retaliation.
