PARKLAND, Florida — More than 20 people are injured after a mass shooting happened Wednesday inside a high school in South Florida.

It is considered an active shooting situation at Stoneman Douglas High School, and the shooter is still inside the building. Several students were believed to still be inside at 3:30 p.m.

The shooting began Wednesday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Broward County has classified it as a "Level 3" casualty incident, meaning at least 20 people are wounded.

It's an active investigation and much of the area around the school is blocked off to the public.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting.

Stoneman Douglas High School has more than 3,000 students in grades 9-12.

Fox News is reporting that authorities have identified the shooter a student who was in class today. No name has been released.

Parkland is located between West Palm Beach an Fort Lauderdale, near Coral Springs.

At least five people were shot to death and several others wounded Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in a horrific episode of school violence that ended with the arrest of a former student.

A federal official identified the suspect as Nicolas Cruz, according to the Associated Press. A former student, he was taken into custody off campus without incident, said Broward Sheriff Scott Israel. The suspect was both inside and outside the school building in the course of the shootings, the sheriff said.

The motive for the shooting is not yet known. Cruz, whose full name is Nicolas de Jesus Cruz, according to the Herald, used the name Nikolas Cruz on social media and also goes by Nick Cruz. Multiple media outlets have now confirmed his identity, but his name has not officially been released.
According to CNN, an AR-15-style rifle was recovered by police. . .

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel confirmed in a news conference that at least 17 people were killed in the high school shooting in Parkland, Florida.
