One person was killed and at least 16 others have been wounded in shootings across the city since Friday night.

The fatal shooting happened Friday night when two men were shot in the West Garfield Park neighborhood.

The men – ages 52 and 53 — were standing in an alley in the 4300 block of West Jackson about 7:20 p.m. when a maroon-colored minivan pulled up alongside the two, police said. A male in the van started talking to them and eventually pulled out a handgun and opened fire.

Eugene Matheny, 52, was shot in the back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:55 p.m., authorities said. The 53-year-old was shot in the upper left thigh and also taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

The most recent non-fatal shooting happened early Sunday when a man shot an acquaintance about 4:30 a.m. in the South Side Hegewisch neighborhood.

A 25-year-old man was being dropped off at a party in the 13600 block of South Brainard and offered to pay the male acquaintance who was driving him in a purple van, police said. The driver of the vehicle then displayed a handgun, demanded the passenger’s money and shot him after he complied, police said. He then drove off.

The victim was transported to Saint Margaret Mercy Healthcare in good condition.

Half an hour earlier, two women were wounded in a drive-by attack in the West Pullman neighborhood.

The duo were sitting in a car at South Parnell and West 118th a few minutes before 4 a.m. when someone in a van pulled up alongside them and fired shots before driving off, police said.

One of the women, 36, was shot in the side and taken in serious condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn. The other woman, 33, was shot in the arm and taken in good condition to MetroSouth Medical Center in Blue Island.

Less than an hour earlier, a man was shot in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

The shooting happened about 3:20 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Cortland, police said. The man, 30, was shot in the hand and taken in stable condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

About an hour earlier, three men were shot in Englewood. The men walked into Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center about 2:30 a.m. Sunday after they were shot at West 61st and South Normal.

One man, 39, was shot in the calf, police said. A 42-year-old was shot in the ankle and a 36-year-old was shot in the thigh. All three were listed in stable condition early Sunday.

About 1 a.m. Sunday, two males were shot in the West Town neighborhood in the 700 block of North Sangamon. Both males were shot in the arm and taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition.

Two women were injured in another shooting in the West Pullman neighborhood about 10:25 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The two showed up at Roseland Community Hospital about 10:25 p.m. and told officers they were shot in the 600 block of West 124th, police said. One of the women, 24, was shot in the knee and the other, 28, was shot in the foot. Both were listed in good condition early Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, a man was shot in the West Pullman neighborhood. The 34-year-old was shot in the leg about 1:50 p.m. in the 12000 block of South Emerald and taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in stable condition, police said.

Friday night, three people were shot in a drive-by shooting on the Near West Side.

Two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy were standing in the 200 block of South Western about 7 p.m. Friday when a silver Pontiac pulled up and someone inside pulled out a handgun and opened fire, police said.

All three were shot and taken in stable condition to Stroger Hospital. Police said the shooting might have been gang-related.

No one is in custody for any of the shootings
    as area detectives investigate.
