California Economy May Outperform U.S. in 2011, Comerica Says

    June 01, 2010, 2:58 PM EDT
    By William Selway

June 1 (Bloomberg) -- California’s economy, the eighth- largest in the world, may grow faster than the rest of the U.S. as soon as next year, according to Comerica Inc. chief economist Dana Johnson.

In previous recoveries, California’s unemployment rate fell compared with the national average as the state added jobs at a quicker pace than the rest of the U.S., Johnson wrote in a research note to clients today. California’s housing market is also showing signs of improving as prices rise, foreclosures fall and the issuance of residential building permits outpaces the nation, he wrote.

“Historical patterns suggest that California could start outperforming the nation in 2011, particularly if it can get its budget problems under control,â€

    California wine

    From Wikipedia,

California wine is wine made in the U.S. state of California. Nearly three-quarters the size of France, California accounts for nearly 90 percent of entire American wine production. The production in California alone is one third larger than that of Australia. If California were a separate country, it would be the world's fourth-largest wine producer.[2]

The state's viticultural history dates back to the 18th century when Spanish missionaries planted the first vineyards to produce wine for Mass.

Following a wine renaissance in the mid-20th century, Californian wine entered the international stage at the 1976 Judgment of Paris wine competition when Californian wines beat out French wines in both red and white wine categories. Today there are more than 1,200 wineries in the state, ranging from small boutique wineries to large corporations like E & J Gallo Winery with distribution across the globe.[3]

San Diego once again eighth-largest U.S. city

San Diego once again eighth-largest U.S. city

    Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at 11 a.m.

San Diego regained the title of eighth-largest city in the country as of last July, surpassing Dallas in population, according to estimates released today by the U.S. Census Bureau.

San Diego was home to 1,306,301 residents, compared to Dallas' 1,299,543, according to the Census Bureau.

San Diego had fallen from eight to ninth, behind Dallas, in the 2008 rankings.

Figures for other metropolitan areas reflected a general population shift away from Rust Belt cities and other manufacturing areas as Americans search for jobs.

According to the Census Bureau, New York City had the nation's largest population in July 2009 with 8.4 million residents.

In second place was Los Angeles with 3.8 million residents; followed by Chicago, 2.9 million; Houston, 2,26 million; Phoenix, 1.6 million; Philadelphia , 1,55 million; San Antonio, 1.37 million; San Diego, 1.3 million; Dallas, 1.3 million; and San Jose, 964,000.
