Thread: Let's ship the Statue of Liberty back to France

Personally, it would have been better if the arabs had bombed the statue rather then the twin towers.
next, consider how many hardworking mexicans we can put to work
rowing the thing back.
the French, as they sip wine, are having their cars are being blown up
by ungrateful muslim guest workers., or rather the anchor babies of
immigrants from yet another african civil war.
melt the thing down and make key chains that say "Not on my dime-Go home"
It will send a message that no we are not open for mass immigration.
we need a new symbol-something to remind Americans that it's not about [/size]consumerism ,but free speech and creativity.

The poem was not originally a part of the statue. The statue initially had absolutely nothing to do with immigration. The statue was not even connected to immigration until the 1930s.

I THINK WE SHOULD KEEP THE STATUE AND REMOVE THE PLACARD. IT IS SO NAIVE TO INVITE ANYONE AND EVERYONE. A NEW PLACARD.....THAT IS WHAT WE NEED. ONE THAT IS MORE REALISTIC. MAYBE "BEWARE OF OWNER"....NO JUST KIDDING. BUT SERIOUSLY WE NEED A NEW PLACARD ON LADY LIBERTY.

It is interesting that the poem was written fully 20 years before someone had the idea of displaying it with the Statue of Liberty...

Plus, there is no formal or written 'rule' that says symbolism such as the SoL has to mean a particular thing to all people. (It may very well not).

Keep the statue, ship the placard with the poem to Mexico City, just rewrite it on the back in Spanish! See how they feel about having 1 million poor foreigners invader their country every year.

They arrest them. They beat them. They rape them. They murder them.

They won't take the statue back unless she's dressed in a burka.

I understand the OP's frustration.

I agree with others, however, we need to remove that placard - it is being misused - for very bad reasons.

I agree! Maybe replace it with "Welcome to America, we are a nation of laws, so please check in before you stay." Otherwise you will be deported immeditely." Or maybe something alittle harsher to get the point accross.
