US Farm Bill Gives Generous Subsidies To Agribusiness

The agriculture bill that was passed by Republicans last week doled out hundreds of millions of dollars in generous subsidies to the sugar industry and other businesses, even as it was hailed by many conservative US politicians as a model of fiscal discipline.
Its passage on Thursday along strict party lines in the House of Representatives came after legislators stripped the bill of food stamps, which for decades were included in agriculture policy, thereby soothing
Republicans who had railed against the ballooning cost of nutritional assistance for the poor.

The decision to exclude the food stamps received much attention. But what has gone largely unnoticed is that just hours before it was passed, other changes were injected into the bill that increased spending on crop insurance and guaranteed other perks to farmers.
