Time to Kill the Department of Homeland Security?

Just over a year after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, President George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security. The goal was to centralize those departments and agencies that dealt with our domestic security.
Many argue that America’s shores are much safer now than they were, but at what cost? Are we really getting our money’s worth by keeping this mega-department? Nick Gillespie of Reason.com offers up three reasons to kill the Department of Homeland Security:

In addition to the reasons given by Gillespie, I would like to offer up a couple more.

To start with, they are doing a pretty poor job of protecting the US border with Mexico. The Obama administration keeps trying to tell us that illegal immigration has been drastically decreased, but all of my sources from the southwest tell me otherwise. Illegal trafficking of drugs and humans is a multi-billion dollar business that seems to be increasing rather than decreasing.

If the DHS was doing its job of reducing illegal border crossings, then why are the danger areas near the border expanding instead of being reduced. Why are more and more people living 100 miles from the Mexican border afraid to go outside at night or to even leave their homes overnight for fear of what they may find when they get home. Why are so many small hospitals and urgent care centers within 100 miles of the border closing their doors because they can’t afford to keep providing free medical care to hundreds of illegals?

Do I even have to mention TSA? Have you traveled through an airport in the past few years? Have you had problems with your luggage or passing through security? Have you had to allow yourself to be nude scanned or have some stranger pat you down and feel your private areas?

I’m not sure the Department of Homeland Security is worth the financial cost or the cost of our freedoms and dignity. It seems that it is just more big government bureaucratic waste that needs to be cut, killed, closed and done away with.
