Lost in bad translation: Accused child sex molester walks, confession tossed

When Michel Carballea Garcia confessed to molesting his fiancee’s young daughter, a conviction seemed a matter of time, not evidence.
Yet on Friday, nine months after his arrest, the 24-year-old Garcia walked out of the Naples jail a free man.
Prosecutors dropped their case after a judge barred Garcia’s confession from trial, determining it wasn’t made with a full understanding of his Miranda rights. Months earlier, a Collier detective admitted that he improperly interpreted the Spanish-English conversation between Garcia and the lead investigator, telling the suspect several times he didn’t need an attorney.
