Perry describes his faith journey to Liberty Univ. students

LYNCHBURG, VA - Texas Governor Rick Perry told students Wednesday at the nation's largest evangelical university not to worry if they're still unsure which life goals to pursue. He assured students at Liberty University that God has them there for a purpose.



The Republican presidential candidate told the convocation of 12,000 students that after returning home from the Air Force at age 27, he was "lost" -- drifting with no sense of purpose.

"My faith journey is not the story of someone who turned to God because I wanted to," he said. "It was because I had nowhere else to turn.

"I had been an officer in the United States Air Force, commanding a fairly substantial piece of sophisticated equipment, telling men and women what to do, but I was lost -- spiritually and emotionally. And I didn't know how to fix it."

Perry said he prayed about what to do with his life. "What I learned as I wrestled with God is that I didn't have to have all the answers -- that they would be revealed to me in due time," he said.

He also told the students that people are not made to go it alone. "As spiritual beings we are meant to live in relationship with our Creator and with one another -- and the happiest moments I've ever experienced are when I am in communion with God and in community with others."
