LAPD finds 1,200 guns, two tons of ammo in dead man's Pacific Palisades home

By KATE MATHER contact the reporter

It wasn't what police expected to find when they searched a man's Pacific Palisades home last week.

More than 1,200 guns were strewn about the Palisades Drive house and garage, police said. The weapons ranged from high-end pistols to shotguns and rifles. Many had never been fired.

Some were still wrapped in their boxes, with the price tags still attached.

It was a "staggering number of guns," said LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith. Police also found roughly two tons of ammunition.

"Our truck couldn't carry it all," Smith said. "We had to go back and make another trip."

The unusual discovery came as police investigated the death of the man, whose decomposing body was found in a car parked down the street from his home.

Although the LAPD's elite Robbery-Homicide Division detectives were initially called to handle the case, Smith said, they determined there were no signs of foul play and are not investigating the death as a homicide.

Coroner's officials said Monday evening that the man had not yet been identified and that they still have not determined how he died.

Detectives are also trying to find out why the man had so many guns. Smith said there were no initial indications that the man had a criminal motive, no signs he was smuggling the weapons or plotting any sort of attack.

But, Smith said, the LAPD's gun detail will examine each of the weapons to determine whether they have been linked to any crime.

"We have a lot of work to do," he said. "Running the background, history and legality of these weapons is going to require a tremendous amount of time."

"It's not a crime to have a large number of weapons so long as they were legal to own and legally obtained," Smith said "We want to make sure that's the case."

I can't explain the need for so much ammo, but it's possible the man was a collector of guns.

Million rounds of ammo found at CA house

    Updated 3/2/2007 4:13 PM ET

Officials stand in a driveway with a cache of ammunition Friday in Norco, Calif. Firefighters responding to a blaze at the Riverside County home Thursday found more than 1 million rounds and multiple firearms inside, authorities said.

NORCO, Calif. (AP) — More than 1 million rounds of ammunition, a cache of weapons and a tunnel were found at a man's California home after an explosive fire that forced a neighborhood evacuation, authorities said Friday.

Crews worked to fortify the tunnel, which measured 5 feet wide by 8 feet long, to ensure it was safe. It appeared to be at least 10 feet deep and led into a backyard, authorities said.

The fire Thursday afternoon at the home in Norco, about 45 miles east of Los Angeles, caused some of the ammunition to explode.

The man tried to run back into the house after firefighters arrived and had to be restrained by sheriff's deputies, Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Juan Zamora said.

After the blaze was extinguished, crews discovered metal and wooden boxes of ammunition for shotguns, small handguns and assault rifles.

On Friday, sheriff's deputies and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives combed the house for evidence.

Dozens of metal and cardboard boxes filled with ammunition for shotguns, small handguns and assault rifles sat in a driveway. Two of the assault rifles were illegal, Zamora said.

The man had no permit for 75 pounds of black gunpowder that was also recovered, Zamora said.

No arrests have been made. The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital where he will receive a psychological evaluation, Zamora said.

Last April, authorities said they found more than 1,300 weapons and 89,000 rounds of ammunition in the San Bernardino County home of a man who claimed to belong to a militant group with aims to overthrow Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. In that case Robert Ferro of Upland, Calif., faces counts of unlawfully owning and failing to register guns.

What is missing here? The coroner says the body has not been identified, but PD says they found 1200 guns in HIS house? How can that be when it is not known who the dead guy is? Ammo found is equal to 3.3 lbs. per gun. Depending upon how many high powered rifles and shot gums, it may not be so much ammo as it sounds when expressed in aggregate tons.

It seems hard to believe that someone in the neighborhood was not aware of guns being accumulated. A squeal is turned into PD, a body is found in the neighborhood, PD gets an otherwise unobtainable search warrant? Now that may call for a question was the body a police plant. Note to the press: Completed stories make for news understood.

I can imagine fiction writers having a heyday on their computer with this idea. Look for it in print, soon.

When a body is found in a parked car and the car isn't reported stolen and the driver's license ID's the person who is also the registered owner of the car the police assume they know who he is but they have to give the coroner time to do a POSITIVE ID by fingerprinting the body and running the prints.
They have to try to locate a next of kin or a friend or neighbor to ID the body.
When they go to the address on the license and no one else is there they have to enter to see if anyone else is dead.
They have to check the source and ownership of each of 1,200 guns. This takes time.
There is no rush on this case because the dead body isn't going anyplace and there were no signs of foul play.
With no signs of foul play an autopsy is required to determine cause of death. That takes time.
Until the FACTS are discovered and released to the media the media can't write many facts. Unless they just make stuff up.

1,200 handguns, ammunition found in dead man’s Pacific Palisades home

1,200 handguns and a large amount of ammunition were found in a home in the 1700 block of Palisades Drive in Pacific Palisades Monday.

POSTED: 07/20/15, 9:06 PM PDT | UPDATED: 12 HRS AGO

PACIFIC PALISADES >> Los Angeles police on Monday were investigating the death of a man whose body was found in a vehicle near his Pacific Palisades home, where 1,200 handguns and a large amount of ammunition were found.

Police were responded around 5 p.m. Friday to the 1700 block of Palisades Drive, where the man’s body was found, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Robbery-Homicide Division detectives learned the man lived on the same street and obtained a search warrant. When they went inside, they found more than two tons of handguns and ammunition, police said.

Detectives were working to determine if the weapons were legal. A bomb squad was also called in to make sure there were no hazardous devices or materials, prompting the evacuation of some nearby homes.

Craig Harvey of the coroner’s office said the body has not yet been examined, but it was decomposed when it was found. The man’s identity has not been confirmed, and the body is listed as John Doe 151, with no cause of death yet determined.

    1. How long does it take to receive an autopsy report?
    2. Most autopsy reports are completed and ready for release within 6 - 8 weeks. In certain cases, additional tests may need to be performed which will delay completion of the report for several additional weeks.

SHOCK: OVER 1,200-GUNS, 2 TONS OF AMMO IN LIBERAL L.A. ENCLAVE

    AP Photo/Matt York

    by JOEL B. POLLAK 21 Jul 2015 72

The Los Angeles Police Department made a shock discovery in the high-profile, celebrity-studded, liberal coastal neighborhood of Pacific Palisades last week: over 1,200 guns and two tons of ammunition in one condominium.

1,200 Guns Found in Pacific Palisades Home After Discovery of Man's Body in Car: LAPD

    KTLA - Los Angeles

Police searched the home after the owner’s body was found decomposing in a car nearby. He was not, apparently, a victim of crime.

The find represented a “staggering number of guns,” LAPD Commander Andrew Smith told the Los Angeles Times, adding that police had to make several trips with a truck to collect them all.

Police are now investigating whether any of the weapons can be tied to illegal activity–an investigation that will take a “tremendous” amount of time, they say.

    Monday UPDATE:

"We don't think the weapons are illegal; we are taking them for public safety," Craig said, adding that it was a preemptive step to ensure the ammunition or guns wouldn't be stolen from the home.

Officers on Tuesday said there was no indication the man was a survivalist, but said his town house was so cluttered, it was impossible to walk inside without stepping on things.
