Mesa, Arizona Shooting: Six Shot, One Dead; Suspect on the Loose

Mesa, Arizona Shooting: Six Shot, One Dead; Suspect on the Loose

Six people were shot, one fatally, in a series of attacks in Mesa, Arizona on Wednesday, triggering the lockdown of several blocks of the city as police searched for the lone suspect, authorities said.

The rampage began at 8:40 a.m. at the Tri City Inn on West Main Street, where an argument exploded into gunfire, Mesa Police spokesman Esteban Flores said. One man died at the scene, and two women were taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

Not long after, gunfire erupted at a nearby restaurant called The Bistro, just outside the campus of East Valley Institute of Technology, Flores said. There, an EVIT student was shot, and ran to the first scene for help from paramedics. He is expected to survive.

At The Bistro, the gunman seized a gray Honda Accord driven by a teacher, and drove to an apartment complex less than two miles away on South Dobson Road, Flores said. The gunman forced his way into an apartment, where he shot a man. That victim is also expected to survive.

Then came reports of another shooting victim at an apartment complex about a quarter mile away. A man shot there remains in critical condition, Flores said.

The manhunt is now on for the gunman, who is believed to have acted alone. The southwestern area of town is now swarming with police, many of whom are in SWAT gear.

Police described the suspect as a white male in late 30s or early 40s with tattoos on his neck and face. He was last seen wearing black shorts and a black shirt.

"Stay indoors, or if you see someone who matches the description, call 911," Flores said. He added, "People should be concerned, but we are looking for him."

Jeremiah Giehl, 39, a photographer, told NBC News he was holed up in the Del Coronado apartment complex, with police outside searching cars by gunpoint. Members of a police SWAT team were going in and out of the Vista Valley apartment complex across the street near the corner of West Emilita Avenue and South Longmore, he said.

"The area is locked down," Giehl said.

Suspect taken into custody after Mesa rampage kills 1, wounds 5

Suspect taken into custody after Mesa rampage kills 1, wounds 5

    Published March 18, 2015 FoxNews.com

NOW PLAYINGPolice: Mesa, Arizona shooting suspect has been captured
A suspect was taken into custody Wednesday after a shooting rampage left one person dead and five others wounded in Mesa, Ariz.
The morning spree included a shooting at a motel, a carjacking and a home invasion at a nearby apartment complex. The shooting prompted an intense hunt for the suspect as Mesa police searched the trunks of cars, interviewed witnesses and brought in SWAT and canine units from other agencies.

Interim Mesa Police Chief John Meza confirmed that the suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was in custody early Wednesday afternoon. A press conference was scheduled for later in the afternoon.

He had been described earlier as being in his early 30s or late 40s with tattoos on his head and face and wearing a black shirt and shorts. However, police said he might have changed his clothing.

The suspect was taken into custody after officers spotted him on an apartment balcony and deployed a stun gun. Numerous officers later led a handcuffed man to a truck parked outside an apartment complex. Police did not immediately release his identity.

    More on this...

The incident started with an argument inside a room at a motel and spilled outside, and three people were wounded there, Mesa police Detective Esteban Flores told The Associated Press. The suspect then shot a person at a nearby restaurant and carjacked a gray Honda Accord. Two more people were wounded at separate apartment complexes, including one during a home invasion.

Several locations in the area were placed on lockdown amid a heavy law enforcement presence, including police searching car trunks and interviewing witnesses. The Arizona Department of Public Safety sent its SWAT team to Mesa to assist with the effort, DPS spokesman Bart Graves said. Scottsdale police are also sending SWAT and canine units.

The shootings occurred near the East Valley Institute of Technology. Nearby Mesa Community College issued an emergency alert, saying its campus was on lockdown and anyone already there should proceed to the safest location. The shooting scene is also near a light rail line that travels through the metro Phoenix area.

Vinny Carbone owns an auto body shop near the shootings. He was getting ready to open up when he heard a man yell "help, help." He later saw a woman outside the motel with what looked like a bullet hole in her side.

Man charged in Mesa shootings appears in court

Oooops. It looks like he may have tripped and fell while they were arresting him.

This is why cops prefer to shoot criminals instead of going hands on with them for an arrest.

Man charged in Mesa shootings appears in court

1 hour ago • The Associated Press

This undated booking photo provided by the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office shows Ryan Giroux, 41, who Mesa police say committed a string of crimes that included a motel shooting, a carjacking and a home invasion that ended with the suspect's arrest on Wednesday, March 18, 2015. Police said the motive for the initial shooting at the motel was unclear but the other three shootings appeared motivated by robbery and the suspect's attempt to flee.

MESA — The man charged in a rampage in a Phoenix suburb that killed one person and wounded five others has made his first appearance before a judge.

A handcuffed Ryan Giroux on Thursday heard the many charges against him, including murder and attempted murder.

A prosecutor asked that bond be set at $2 million for what he called a "spree of multiple serious offenses."

The judge set a court date for next week.

Giroux's face was bruised because police said he struggled with officers as he resisted arrested.

PD: Drugs, money initially motivated Mesa shooting rampage that killed 1

Mesa police say they believe drugs and money were the initial motive that triggered an ex-convict to shoot and kill one person and wound five others in a rampage in Mesa. Afterward, officers flooded the streets in an intense, hourslong hunt for the gunman. More
