ANAHEIM — A 19-year-old man who worked for a meat company in Anaheim was found stabbed to death last week at Playas de Tijuana, just west of downtown Tijuana, Mexico, authorities said.

Shane Pennington had been working for A Cut Above Beef and Seafood since January. His body was discovered on March 24.

His grieving mother, Elizabeth Taylor, said she is flying in from North Carolina on Thursday to get her son's body.

"I'll be out there to get my son," Taylor said during a phone interview from her North Carolina home. "It's not real to me until I get out there," she said.

Taylor said she talked to her son on March 23 and he mentioned that some of his friends had asked him to go to Tijuana the weekend before, but he had to work.

Taylor tried to deter her son from going to Tijuana because of the violence that has plagued the border town.

    "He said 'Yeah'," she said.

Taylor said her son lived life to the fullest.

"He wanted to live large and be free. That's why he went to California," Taylor said. "If it was something new, he was going to do it. No questions asked, no second guesses."

Taylor believes her son was with somebody else because she said he never went anywhere by himself.

"I can say that strongly because I know that's how he was," Taylor said.

Pennington was last seen by his employer on Saturday, March 21, when he asked to take a truck home because he was going to work on Sunday, said Gayle Boan, a manager at the company.

On Monday, March 23, Boan said Pennington sent a text message saying he was ill and was going to the doctor. That was the last time his employer heard from him.

Boan said they repeatedly tried to reach him, but his cell phone was turned off.

Taylor said her son's cell phone was missing when his body was found.

The truck was reported stolen with Anaheim police on Thursday. It was still missing as of today.

Boan said the company learned of Pennington's death when they got a call from his mother on Friday.

"He was just a wonderful young man that was looking to go somewhere in life," Boan said. "He was like a son to us. Our whole crew is upset about it," she said.

Boan said Pennington had dreams of going to college and had applied to join the Army.

San Diego police are assisting Mexican authorities with the investigation. Detective Fausto Romero said his unit, which serves as a liaison with Mexico, was contacted by Mexican authorities who were trying to identify the body.

"The whole situation is strange," Romero said. "Nobody knows how he got there or what he was doing."

No arrests have been made and no motive has been determined for Pennington's killing.

"I want whoever did this caught," Taylor said. "From what I've gathered, it was ugly."

Taylor said she was told her son was stabbed in the "Head, neck and chest and someone was very angry."

"It was brutal," Taylor said. "The knife was still sticking out of his body."
