Mexico is being battered by two severe storms - one its eastern coast and another on its west, officials say.

More than 5,000 people have been evacuated on the Atlantic seaboard ahead of Hurricane Ingrid which already has winds of 120km/h (75mph).

It is expected to make landfall in the coming days.

Tropical Storm Manuel has hit the western coast, on the Pacific Ocean, bringing almost twice the monthly rainfall in just three days.

The states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Chihuahua have been the worst hit with some road and telecommunications links down.

The BBC's Will Grant in Mexico City says that Hurricane Ingrid is the second major storm of the hurricane season and has been steadily gathering strength in the Gulf of Mexico.

Our correspondent says that it is considered to pose a serious risk to several communities in the region.

Most of those who have been evacuated are staying in official shelters while the remainder have sought refuge with friends and families.

In particular, the southern state of Chiapas and the eastern state of Veracruz have been affected.

Officials say that two of Mexico's three major oil-exporting ports are closed, although most of the country's Gulf Coast ports including Veracruz remained open on Saturday as the storm approached.

Ingrid is expected to deposit between 25cm (10in) and 63cm (25in) of rain over a large part of eastern Mexico, which will cause rivers to overflow and create flash floods and mudslides.

It could also cause a storm surge that would raise waters by 0.6m to 1.2m (2ft-4ft) above normal tide levels near where it makes landfall.

Earlier this week, 13 people were killed in Veracruz when their homes were buried under a landslide caused by heavy rains.

On the other side of the country, it is a similar story in the Pacific states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Chihuahua to the north.

They have been hit by Tropical Storm Manuel and an estimated 600mm (23in) of rain is expected to be dumped in the region in just three days, almost twice the monthly rainfall.

The authorities fear that such massive amounts could cause further flash flooding and mudslides over what is traditionally a weekend of celebration for the country's independence day.

Hurricane Ingrid and Tropical Storm Manuel triggered rain, landslides and floods on Mexico's east and west coasts Sunday, killing at least 20 people and forcing thousands to evacuate before landfall.

Manuel made landfall on the Pacific side while Ingrid, a category one hurricane, was expected to reach the coast on the Gulf of Mexico on Monday, but they had already swollen rivers, flooded streets and damaged bridges.
State-run energy firm Pemex evacuated three oil platforms off the Gulf coast of the northeastern state of Tamaulipas and shut down 24 wells, the company said on its Twitter account.
On the Pacific coast, Manuel was weakening after making landfall near the Colima state town of Manzanillo, packing top winds of almost 50 miles (85 kilometers) per hour as it moved northwest, the US hurricane center said in a 2100 GMT advisory.
The storms were blamed for at least 14 deaths in the southwestern state of Guerrero and six in the central states of Puebla and Hidalgo, officials said.

In Guerrero, more than 2,000 people left their homes while 21,000 households were without power, state civil protection official Constantino Gonzales Vargas told AFP.
Of the 14 fatalities, six people were killed on Saturday when their van's driver lost control due to a lack of visibility and a slippery road on their way to the resort city of Acapulco, he said.
Six others died in landslides and the collapse of walls in three Guerrero towns. Two more people drowned when they were swept away by a swollen river in the state capital Chilpancingo.
Water rose as high as three feet (one meter) in parts of Acapulco, dragging cars away, while the road leading to the international airport's terminal was closed.
The city's port was shut to navigation and a warning was issued against recreational use of beaches. Two men who sailed away were reported missing.

Manuel was 15 miles (20 kilometers) north of Manzanillo and was expected to dissipate on Monday, but it was expected to produce life-threatening surf and coastal flooding, the Miami-based hurricane center said.
As Hurricane Ingrid crept toward the east coast, three people, including a 16-year-old boy, were killed in a landslide in Tlatlauquitepec, a mountain town in the central state of Puebla.
In the central state of Hidalgo, a nurse and her driver drowned when their car was swept away by a overflowing river as they headed to a mountain area heavily affected by days of rain, civil protection officials said.
Another woman died when a landslide struck her home.
The hurricane had already forced the evacuation of 6,000 people in the east coast state of Veracruz after two rivers overflowed their banks.
The US National Hurricane Center said at 2100 GMT that Ingrid's outer rain bands were nearing the Gulf coast and that it could slightly strengthen early Monday before reaching the coast.
The storm's center was 110 miles (175 kilometers) east of Tampico, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour.
The forecasters also said Ingrid was expected to trigger a storm surge of as much as five feet (1.5 meters), with "large and destructive waves."

ACAPULCO, Mexico (AP) — Tropical Storm Manuel swept onto Mexico's Pacific coast Sunday while Hurricane Ingrid swirled offshore on the other side of the country, as heavy rains and landslides caused at least 24 deaths and led authorities to evacuate thousands.
Stormy conditions led some communities in affected states to cancel Independence Day celebrations planned for Sunday and Monday.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Manuel began to weaken as soon as it made landfall near the port of Manzanillo during the afternoon, but remained a threat to produce flash floods and mudslides. It was predicted to dissipate by Monday.
In the southern coastal state of Guerrero, authorities said a landslide on the outskirts of Acapulco buried a house and killed six family members. Three people were swept to their deaths by a river, also on the edge of the resort city. A collapsing wall killed one person in the city.
Elsewhere in Guerrero, six people died when their pickup truck skidded on a rain-swept highway in the mountains, and landslides killed two more people.

The rains caused some rivers to overflow, damaging hundreds of homes and disrupting communications for several hours.
Manuel had maximum sustained winds of about 40 mph (65 kph) and was moving to the northwest at 9 mph (15 kph) late Sunday afternoon. Its center was about 35 miles (60 kilometers) northwest of Manzanillo.
Rains from Ingrid caused landslides that killed three people in the central state of Puebla, and a woman died when a landslide buried her house in Hidalgo state.
In the southern state of Oaxaca, which was affected by both storms, authorities said a child died after being swept away by a swollen river and a teenager was killed by a landslide.
The hurricane center said Ingrid, the second hurricane of the Atlantic storm season, could reach the Mexican mainland by Monday morning.

Manuel was expected to dump 10 to 15 inches of rain over parts of Guerrero and Michoacan state, with maximums of 25 inches possible in some isolated areas. Authorities said those rains would present an especially dangerous threat in mountains, where flash floods and mudslides were possible.
Ingrid also was expected to dump very heavy rains. It had maximum sustained winds of 75 mph (120 kph) and was centered about 125 miles (200 kilometers) east-northeast of the port city of Tampico as it moved northwest at 3 mph (6 kph). A hurricane warning was in effect from Cabo Rojo to La Pesca.
In Tamaulipas state to the north, where Ingrid was expected to come ashore, the government said in a statement that Independence Day festivities were cancelled in the cities of Tampico, Madero and Altamira. The Sept. 15 and 16 celebrations commemorate Mexico's battle of independence from Spain.
Officials in the Gulf state of Veracruz began evacuating coastal residents Friday night, and civil protection authorities said more than 6,600 people had been moved to shelters or the homes of family and friends.
More than 1,000 homes in Veracruz state had been affected by the storm to varying degrees, and 20 highways and 12 bridges had damage, the state's civil protection authority said. A bridge collapsed near the northern Veracruz city of Misantla on Friday, cutting off the area from the state capital, Xalapa.
