Nevada troopers in trucks spot dangerous drivers

Nevada troopers in trucks spot dangerous drivers

RENO, Nev. — Watch out for those big rigs on Nevada highways – a state trooper may be riding shotgun and ready to nab motorists who cut off the tractor-trailers.

The Nevada Highway Patrol is leasing three tractor-trailers and hiring professional drivers in a campaign aimed at reducing highway collisions involving trucks and cars, Nevada Highway Patrol Capt. Julie Johnson Wednesday.

The decoy trucks will be driving around Reno, Las Vegas and Elko until February – and cars, not other trucks, are the troopers' main concern.

"If they think a cop may be in the cab, maybe they'll be a little less likely to cut off that truck," Lt. Joseph Wingard said.

He said that in 20 years on the job he's seen many fatal accidents caused by small vehicles pulling in front of big rigs.

The troopers inside the trucks note license plates of drivers who trail them too closely or cut them off, relaying that information to troopers in patrol cars who will make the traffic stop.

Robert Barton, a 30-year truck driver, says it takes a truck traveling at highway speeds the length of a football field to stop.

"Most motorists don't have a clue how long it takes to stop a large truck," he said.

The campaign follows a one-day experiment in 2008 that had troopers issuing 83 citations across the state.

The latest effort is being conducted with federal funding. Johnson said other states have had similar campaigns but she didn't have details.

In 2006, the Highway Patrol reported 594 accidents involving big rigs; 43 of those wrecks were fatal.

Which is exactly why I take small roads rather than highways. There is nothing scarier than seeing nothing but a big rig grill in your rearview mirror. Either I scoot into the other lane, or if there is none, slow down so that the guy has to pass me if I can't pull off the road.
