Two days before Election Day, the office for Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who is in a closely contested race for governor, announced Sunday that it was opening an investigation into the state Democratic Party for a "failed attempt to hack the state's voter registration system," a move Democrats slammed as a political stunt.
"After a failed attempt to hack the state's voter registration system, the Secretary of State's office opened an investigation into the Democratic Party of Georgia on the evening of Saturday, November 3, 2018," Kemp's office said in a statement. "Federal partners, including the Department of Homeland Security and Federal Bureau of Investigation, were immediately alerted."
Further details about the nature of the purported hack attempt or its connection to the Democratic Party were not provided.
Georgia Secretary of State spokeswoman Candice Broce declined to comment on the inquiry but confirmed that the state Democratic Party was under investigation for "possible cybercrimes."
Hello! We’ve got complete midterm election coverage right here. Let’s begin!

Rebecca DeHart, executive director of the Georgia Democratic Party, said Kemp's "so-called investigation" was "yet another abuse of power by an unethical Secretary of State."
"To be very clear, Brian Kemp's scurrilous claims are 100 percent false," DeHart said in a statement shared on social media. "This political stunt form Kemp just days before the election is yet another example of why he cannot be trusted."
Kemp is in a close race against Stacey Abrams, former minority leader in the Georgia House of Representatives. The RealClearPolitics average of polls in the race shows Kemp ahead by about one percentage point, well within the margin of error.
CNN's Jake Tapper informed Abrams of Kemp's cybercrime allegation during her appearance Sunday on "State of the Union."
"I've heard nothing about it, and my reaction would be that this a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duties," Abrams said. "He is desperate to turn the conversation away from his failures, from his refusal to honor his commitments and from the fact that he is part of a nationwide system of voter suppression that will not work in this election."
Abrams, an African-American woman, has accused Kemp of intentionally purging voters to target minorities.
More: Will Georgia voting controversies discourage voters from turning out?
On Friday, U.S. District Court Judge Eleanor Ross granted an emergency injunction that will allow 3,141 people to vote in Tuesday's election. Those people had been taken off the rolls because of an "exact match" law, which allows zero discrepancies or errors on a voter's registration.
In her ruling, Ross said she had "grave concerns" about "the differential treatment inflicted on a group of individuals who are predominantly minorities."
Democrats have called on Kemp to step down as secretary of state, accusing him of a conflict of interest in overseeing the office that supervises the state's election while running as a candidate himself.
The allegations of voter suppression and the possibility that Abrams could become the first African-American woman to be a governor in the United States has drawn national attention to the race.
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have traveled to the state to campaign for Kemp. Former President Barack Obama, along with celebrities Oprah Winfrey and Will Ferrell, are among those who have campaigned for Abrams.

Georgia Investigating Democrats For Allegedly Hacking Voting System

"I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber-crimes.."

Two days before the Nov. 6 midterm elections, Georgia Secretary of State and Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp revealed on Sunday that his office is opening an investigation into the Georgia Democratic Party on allegations that it attempted to hack the state's voting system, including allegations of possible cyber crimes.

Kempe, whose office announced the investigation in a Sunday morning news release, didn't reveal any details of the probe, which comes on the heels of a court victory by Democrats, who successfully challenged the state's attempt to de-register 50,000 voters under the state's "exact match" voter ID law, according to the Daily Caller.
"While we cannot comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber-crimes," Kempe press secretary Candice Broce said in the release. Both the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have been alerted.
The state Democratic Party has called the allegations "100% false" and "an abuse of power" by Kempe. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a computer scientist and attorney who are currently suing Kempe said that the lawsuit is "an attempt to distract from a report about vulnerabilities in the state's voter registration website."
The "vulnerabilities" could potentially allow anybody to access the voting records of individual voters.
Poll numbers between Kempe and his opponent, Democrat Stacy Abrams, have tightened to within a two percentage point margin as Abrams has benefited from several celebrity endorsements, including the support of Oprah Winfrey, who joined Abrams in knocking on doors last week.
The Daily Caller quoted Abrams as saying the lawsuit was a "desperate attempt" to sway the vote in Kempe's favor ahead of the election.
"I’ve heard nothing about it, and my reaction would be that this is a desperate attempt on the part of my opponent to distract people from the fact that two different federal judges found him derelict in his duties and have forced him to accept absentee ballots to be counted and those who are being held captive by the exact match system to be allowed to vote," Abrams said.
For many Georgia voters, news of the investigation will not be taken lightly. According to a poll conducted by the AJC and a local TV station, many voters in the state are concerned about the integrity of its elections, including fears about tampering and ineligible voters casting ballots.

Trying to steal the election in Georgia! Abrams and the Democrat thugs tried to hack into the voting system.

Georgia Sec. of State: Democrats Tried to ‘Hack’ Voter Registration Site

    AP 4 Nov 2018 531

Political tensions ratcheted further Sunday when Secretary of State (SOS) and Republican gubernatorial hopeful Brian Kemp’s office accused the Georgia Democratic Party of attempting to “breach” the state’s online voter registration system on Saturday. The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI were alerted to the situation, according to official statements.

The two statements issued by the Georgia SOS on Sunday are limited on details, but point a finger at the state Democratic Party committee for an alleged failed “hacking.” The initial release claims the “possible cyber crime” occurred on Saturday evening.
“While we cannot comment on the specifics of an ongoing investigation, I can confirm that the Democratic Party of Georgia is under investigation for possible cyber crimes,” SOS press secretary Candice Broce said. As of that release, the State said “federal partners” were made aware of the matter.
Secretary Kemp’s office followed up with more details, accusing the Democrats of targeting the online voter registration tool:
We opened an investigation into the Democratic Party of Georgia after receiving information from our legal team about failed efforts to breach the online voter registration system and My Voter Page. We are working with our private sector vendors and investigators to review data logs. We have contacted our federal partners and formally requested the Federal Bureau of Investigation to investigate these possible cyber crimes. The Secretary of State’s office will release more information as it becomes available.
The Georgia Democrats vehemently rejected the allegations in a circulated statement, describing the matter as “another example of abuse of power by an unethical Secretary of State.” The Democrats added that they were “unaware” of the allegation until the first press release was issued on Sunday.
“This political stunt from Kemp just days before the election is yet another example of why he cannot be trusted and should not be overseeing an election in which he is also a candidate for governor,” the statement charged. The Georgia Democrats posited that “it’s likely we’ll see even more of his abuses of power as the election nears.”
This is a developing story and will be updated as new information is provided.
