DOJ Memo: Sure It’s Legal to Kill Americans with Drones, Just Justify It Right

This is headlining on Drudge, and for good reason:

A confidential Justice Department memo concludes that the U.S. government can order the killing of American citizens if they are believed to be “senior operational leaders” of al-Qaida or “an associated force” — even if there is no intelligence indicating they are engaged in an active plot to attack the U.S.

The 16-page memo, a copy of which was obtained by NBC News, provides new details about the legal reasoning behind one of the Obama administration’s most secretive and controversial polices: its dramatically increased use of drone strikes against al-Qaida suspects, including those aimed at American citizens, such as the September 2011 strike in Yemen that killed alleged al-Qaida operatives Anwar al-Awlaki and Samir Khan. Both were U.S. citizens who had never been indicted by the U.S. government nor charged with any crimes.

I know some were OK with the drone strikes on those two, but it opens a door to a slippery slope.

If the federal government is allowed to decide, without the transparency of due process, that an American should be terminated, where is the line drawn, assuming a line exists?

For example, can an American in the continental United States be bombinated “if they are believed to be ‘senior operational leaders’ of al-Qaida or ‘an associated force?’”

Is it limited to this definition, or could senior leaders of anti-government militias be targeted?

What about the leaders of Anonymous?

Think I’m a candidate for the Tin Foil Hat Ready Room?

The Director of the FBI couldn’t answer if the President could kill American citizens when questioned by Congress:

Now for the liberals out there who are justifying this by saying Obama would never in a million years use a drone to kill Americans on U.S. soil, answer this – would you trust this guy with that power:

How about the next Republican president, assuming there is one?

Would you trust him not to bomb Americans?

Due process precedes punishment. That is an absolute that should be constant on both the left and right.
