Sonoco Products Co., a packaging company, will close 12 facilities next year, including two Chicago injection molded plastics plants next month.

Effective Jan. 31, the two plants are being shuttered, in a cost-cutting move that also will result in 10 other facilities being closed, Sonoco said Monday in a news release.

3M Co. is eliminating about 400 jobs at its Maplewood campus as part of a larger restructuring at the manufacturing giant.

The company is outsourcing much of its administrative services and eliminating other jobs to get to the 400 figure, which is about 4 percent of its headquarters total.

As the world turns, so will the outsourcing continue. The majority of the blame rest with our legislative body in Washingon, not the businesses and corporations. Why shouldn't they take advantage of a labor wage between .42 - $2.00 an hour that can be had in a third world country? Plus, to my knowledge our government doesn't impose any penalities for leaving, but does eagerly allows them to ship the goods back to the United States at no cost other than the price of crating and shipping (normal business expenses). True, corporate America and their hired lobbyist have a lot to do with the problem, but if we had TRUE representatives of the people in Washington - corporate America wouldn't have had their way. Basically, when assigning blame we need to look to our elected representatives in Washington first and corporate America second.
