The People’s Climate March—and Some Companies’, Too

A gathering in Times Square on Aug. 28 to promote the People's Climate March

For those who haven’t heard about the People’s Climate March in New York City this Sunday, here’s some important information, according to the organizers: It will be massive, maybe the largest gathering of its kind, and history-making. The many environmental and labor groups behind the march have put ads on the city’s subways, as well as in the New York Times. They’re calling for “a prosperous, low-carbon future” before next week’s United Nations Climate Summit.

The public-relations effort is impressive. Given that, it’s probably not too surprising that a few companies have joined in.

You might be able to guess which one came out first. That’s right, Patagonia. The company that has at times urged consumers not to buy its products announced that its four New York City stores will be closed on Sunday so its employees can participate in the march. The company’s chief executive officer, Rose Marcario, is going, too. One store near the route will be offering coffee and bagels before things get under way, Marcario said in a note on Patagonia’s website, adding that the stores will reopen at 3 p.m.

PepsiCo (PEP) has made a public show of support for the goals of the march, if not the marchers themselves. The company sent a release on Friday announcing that it has a plan to phase out hydrofluorocarbons by 2020. “Combating climate change is absolutely critical to the future of our company, customers, consumers—and our world,” said Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi. “I believe all of us need to take action now.”

The White House noted that, ahead of the climate summit, other companies have agreed to cut emissions of greenhouse gasses. Those companies include Target(TGT), Coca-Cola (KO), and Red Bull, all known for employing fairly sophisticated marketing folks. As far as I can tell, the chief executives of these companies haven’t made any statements this week.

As usual, it is all bout money and how to make US citizens fund the entire world because no other country is expected to pay as fair a share as already strapped and overtaxed American citizens.

Robin Hood Tax rally to kick off People’s Climate March

Tax on Wall Street key to funding climate solutions
BY JANET REDMAN, SEPTEMBER 17, 2014.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) will join community, health, labor, student and environmental groups to kick start the People’s Climate March and United Nations Climate Summit 2014 with a rally hailing a Robin Hood Tax — a tax on Wall Street also known as a financial transaction tax — as a key solution to addressing the climate crisis. The rally will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday, September 21 at the corner of W. 58th and Broadway in New York City.

Representative Ellison said, “A financial transaction tax would raise funds to help communities deal with the devastating effects of a rapidly changing climate and curb harmful high frequency trading.”

Jean Ross, RN, Co-president of National Nurses United said, “In my 40 years as a registered nurse, I’ve witnessed the devastating effects of environmental injustice on my patients. The climate crisis is the number one threat to human health. It’s time to implement real solutions. The Robin Hood Tax is one of the most powerful ways to fund those solutions.”

The Robin Hood Tax is a tiny tax on trades of stocks, bonds and other financial instruments and would generate hundreds of billions of dollars of new revenue. Representative Ellison has introduced legislation to establish a Robin Hood Tax, the Inclusive Prosperity Act, H.R. 1579.

Robert Tolbert, board member of VOCAL-NY, said, “Nobel Prize-winning economists and billionaire businessmen are for it. The Pope is for it. But to move the idea past slick Wall Street lobbyists in Congress, we must show that the people are for it. That’s what the Robin Hood Tax contingent at the People’s Climate March will do.”

Karen Orenstein of Friends of the Earth U.S. said, “Poor countries have done little, and in some cases nothing at all, to cause the climate crisis. Yet they are the ones left footing a very expensive bill to deal with its fallout – a bill paid not only in money, but in lives lost and livelihoods destroyed. A Robin Hood Tax would generate public money that’s desperately needed to help people around the world.”

Eleven European countries, including Germany, are establishing a regional Robin Hood Tax. France, a member of that coalition, already has a Robin Hood Tax that generates revenue used, in part, to help developing countries address climate change.

Janet Redman of the Institute for Policy Studies said, “It’s past time for the U.S. to step up to the plate. Wall Street has made out like a bandit for far too long, and we need Robin Hood to set it right. While we see cuts in education, healthcare and environmental protection – and increases in inequality – Wall Street bankers continue to reap big profits and fat cat bonuses.”

Michael Tikili of Health GAP said, “By making Wall Street pay its fair share, the Robin Hood Tax can help shore up funding for goods and services that keep people and our communities healthy and whole, like providing money to help end the global AIDS pandemic.”

As Activists Gear Up for People's Climate March, Rep. Jim McDermott Pushes Carbon Tax

    Thursday, 18 September 2014 11:12
    By Amy Goodman,
    Democracy Now!

World leaders are gathering at the United Nations next week for a major summit on climate change. On September 21, more than 100,000 people are expected to attend the People’s Climate March being held in New York City.

We talk to Rep. Jim McDermott about his bill, the Managed Carbon Price Act, that aims to reduce air pollution in the United States by establishing a federal price on the emission of greenhouse gases that are responsible for causing global warming.

We also hear from one of the more than 170 climate activists from across the United States who are traveling to New York on "The People’s Climate Train" to attend this Sunday’s march. New figures show last month was the warmest August on record around the globe. According to NASA, West Antarctica saw hotter temperatures of up to 8 degrees Celsius higher than normal, or 14 degrees Fahrenheit. This year so far is the fourth hottest on record.

    TRANSCRIPT:

AMY GOODMAN: Congressman McDermott, last question. I want to ask you about the climate change crisis. Next week, world leaders gathering here at the U.N. for a climate summit, major march planned here for New York on Sunday, the People’s Climate March. Earlier this year, you reintroduced legislation to reduce harmful carbon dioxide emissions and raise the cost of climate pollution. Very briefly, can you explain what you’ve proposed?
REP. JIM McDERMOTT: Well, you know, this last week we had a conference in Washington, in Seattle, and Henry Paulson came out and came out for a carbon tax. And I thought to myself, when Henry Paulson and Jim McDermott agree on something, it’s about time to do it. We have got to take a national stand to protect ourselves, but also to take our leadership position in the world. And I think that you’re going to see a carbon tax debated in the next Congress. I think it’s time for us to face the fact that the Arctic ice cap is melting and the Antarctic is also melting, and we cannot have the effects of climate change without tremendous disruptions to our country and to the world, really, economy. So I think it’s going to be a matter of debate in January.
AMY GOODMAN: More than 170 activists from across the United States are traveling to New York on "The People’s Climate Train" to attend this Sunday’s People’s Climate March. The activists have been riding together on an Amtrak train from San Francisco. Democracy Now!’s Denis Moynihan joined the train near Denver, Colorado, and spoke with Climate Train participant Pennie Opal Plant.
PENNIE OPAL PLANT: As a grandmother, for me, this is the most important thing I could ever be doing. And I’ll be joining the indigenous bloc when we get to New York, and there are indigenous people coming in from all over the world. And so, look for us. We’re going to be there. We’re going to be strong. We’re going to be powerful. We are the people that are on the front lines at all of the fossil fuel extraction sites, from the tar sands to the Bakken oil fields to what’s going on in the Amazon, Yasuní, Peru, everywhere.

AMY GOODMAN: That was Pennie Opal Plant on the Climate Train. Congressmember Jim McDermott, we want to thank you for joining us from Washington, D.C. And Democracy Now! will be out covering the major protest on Sunday. You can go to our website at democracynow.org to watch that protest and to see and hear the interviews. Also tomorrow on Democracy Now!, we will spend the hour with Naomi Klein. She is out with her new book, her new opus; it is called This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate. So tune in to Democracy Now!, democracynow.org. Congressmember McDermott, thanks so much. When we come back, Billy Bragg on the Scottish independence vote that’s coming up tomorrow. Stay with us.http://truth-out.org/news/item/26283...hes-carbon-tax

More than 1,000 Vermonters head to climate march

Big moment in climate justice, says organizer

    Published 5:07 PM EDT Sep 19, 2014

MONTPELIER, Vt. —More than 1,000 Vermonters are planning to attend the New York version of what is expected to be a series of world-wide marches calling for solutions to the threat of climate change.

    RELATED

Maeve McBride of 350 Vermont says plans call for 22 buses to carry Vermonters to the Sunday Peoples Climate March in New York.

Some of the Vermont buses will be leaving on Saturday while others will be leaving early Sunday morning, to arrive in time for the New York march. The buses will be picking up passengers from across Vermont.

She says other Vermonters will travel to New York on their own.

McBride calls it a big moment in the movement for climate justice.

Organizers of the national event are calling it the largest climate march in history.

West Virginians headed to world’s largest climate march

    by David Gutman, Staff writer

If you’ve watched even 20 minutes of TV in the last month or so, you’ve almost certainly seen an ad from some congressional candidate promising to fight against the “war on coal.” What you have certainly not seen is any West Virginia politician promising to fight a war on climate change.

But that’s a fight that an awful lot of people, including some West Virginians, are interested in.

Today, New York City will host what’s being billed as the world’s biggest climate march, with more than 100,000 people expected to march through the streets of Manhattan. Included in those numbers are 56 West Virginians, who chartered a red-eye bus for a 15-hour drive to New York to participate in the march. Dozens of others are also carpooling to the march.

“It’s kind of a taboo subject when you look at the ads,” said Robin Wilson, who’s carpooling to the march from his home in Roane County. “So often in West Virginia we don’t get people willing to talk about how we prevent climate change and I think it’s a super urgent issue, and we’re just not making the progress we need to.”

The march was organized in advance of the United Nations Climate Summit, which will convene world leaders in New York on Tuesday to discuss the issue.

Regardless of West Virginia leaders’ willingness or eagerness to discuss the issue, the scientific community is unequivocal that climate change is happening, it is caused by humans and it poses serious threats to human society.

“The effects of climate change are already occurring on all continents and across the oceans,” the U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote in its most recent comprehensive report.

“Observed impacts of climate change have already affected agriculture, human health, ecosystems on land and in the oceans, water supplies and some people’s livelihoods.”

Marcus Fioravante is traveling from Huntington to New York for the march because he says it is important to speak up, to be part of a movement, even if those in power don’t listen.

“It’s so important to show how as Appalachians we are affected by this,” Fioravante said. “It’s important for us to go and stand up and say we’re tired of being a colony; we’re tired of being an extraction pool for the rest of the world.”

Steve Hamilton, who organized the bus trip, said they will be marching as part of an Appalachian contingent with others from Kentucky, Virginia and Tennessee. Mountaintop removal mines have altered the landscape of parts of Appalachia, and because of that, Hamilton said, they’ll be at the head of the march with others who have seen their homes impacted by fossil fuels and climate-related issues.

They will be in a section of the march with the theme “Frontlines of crisis, forefront of change.” They’ll be marching with victims of Superstorm Sandy and Pacific Islanders, whose homes are threatened by rising sea levels.

“Everyone brings a special story to this issue, and it won’t be easy, but you have to listen to all those stories,” said D.L. Hamilton, a Charleston lawyer who is riding on the bus.

She said that it can be difficult to talk about climate change in West Virginia where coal — a major contributor to climate change — dominates the conversation and plays a big role in the economy.

“We have challenges different from a lot of places,” she said. “Our economy depends on a fossil fuel, and people who are dependent on that coal economy have to be helped.”

She said that she was at first dubious of how effective the march could be, but decided to go when she realized that the world’s leaders would be only blocks away at the United Nations.

“I’m not sure what one person can do,” Hamilton said. “But this one person is at least going to stand up and be counted.”
