Navy Shows Off First Operational Laser Weapon

The Navy’s first laser weapon is deployed and operational about theUSS Ponce in the Arabian Gulf, the Office of Naval Researchannounced Wednesday.

The 30-kilowatt laser weapon was tested on the Ponce, an amphibious transport dock, between September and November before declared operational. During the tests, it shot down a small drone and destroyed targets on speeding boats.

“Laser weapons are powerful, affordable and will play a vital role in the future of naval combat operations,” said Rear Adm. Matthew L. Klunder, chief of naval research. “We ran this particular weapon, a prototype, through some extremely tough paces, and it locked on and destroyed the targets we designated with near-instantaneous lethiality.”

The Navy said the weapon performed flawlessly in tests, including in adverse weather conditions such as high winds, heat and humidity. The system can address multiple targets using a range of escalating options, from non-lethal optical “dazzling” to destruction if necessary.

It could prove to be a pivotal asset against what are termed “asymmetric threats,” which include small attack boats and drones, according to the Navy.

Officials noted that the laser can fire as long as there is electricity, making it less costly that traditional shells or missiles.

“At less than a dollar per shot, there’s no question about the value,” said Klunder.

He said the Navy is working on a more powerful, next-generation laser weapon that will generate 100 to 150 kilowatts and be ready by 2016 or 2017.
