NBC: GOP Inviting 'Duck Dynasty' Star to SOTU Not 'Dignified'; 'Trying to Make A Partisan Political Point'

    By Kyle Drennen | January 29, 2014 | 12:55 A A

During NBC's live State of the Union coverage Tuesday night, chief White House correspondent Chuck Todd sneered at Duck Dynasty star Willie Robertson being a Republican guest at the event:

"...after the shooting with Gabby Giffords and for a couple of State of the Unions in a row....There was more of a dignified feeling about the guests that you would invite.

Boy, you can tell things are a lot different now, when you're inviting Duck Dynasty stars. Everybody's trying to make a partisan political point."

Todd concluded: "You get the feeling that whatever Kumbaya that there had been, at least in the last couple of years, that's – that's gone with this State of the Union."

During the 2013 State of the Union, Todd never voiced any concern over President Obama using Gabby Giffords herself to make a "partisan political point" about pushing gun restrictions.

Minutes before Todd's rant, Capitol Hill correspondent Kelly O'Donnell had noted Robertson's attendance: "One of the reality TV stars of Duck Dynasty, Willie Robertson, is here with his star-spangled bandanna. And there has been a parade of members, Republican members of the House, who've come from the floor up to the second level to shake hands with him."

The networks thoroughly denounced Robertson's father and fellow Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson after he expressed his religious opposition to homosexuality.

‘Duck Dynasty’ star turns heads at State of the Union

WASHINGTON — One of the most celebrated guests at the State of the Union address Tuesday was not a politician, but Willie Robertson, a star of the hit A&E show “Duck Dynasty.”

Robertson attended the speech as a guest of Louisiana Rep. Vance McAllister, and he stood out in the sea of coats and ties with his long beard, untucked white shirt, and signature American flag bandana around his head.
“It was neat being here,” he told reporters after the speech. “It’s cool to be here. Neat experience.”

From the moment Robertson arrived in the Capitol complex, he was in high demand — multiple lawmakers tweeted pictures of themselves posing with him before the speech.

When he was seated in the visitor’s gallery of the House chamber before the speech, he was introduced to House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, who had made a special trip up there to speak to Robertson and shook his hand with a big grin on his face. Later, Sen. John McCain waved up at him from the House floor. McCain pulled over New York Democratic Sen. Kristin Gillibrand and pointed out Robertson; Gillibrand also waved excitedly. Robertson waved back.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Rep. Steve Israel approached Robertson after the speech, introducing himself and telling him he “just wanted to say hello.”

Asked how it felt to be one of the big attractions of the evening, Robertson told The Daily Caller: “It was awesome.”

“I don’t know,” he went on. “I think it’s the beard.”

At that point, a staffer interrupted the conversation to ask Robertson to take a picture with her.
