More than 1,500 people crowded into a job fair today run by the Employment Guide at the Hyatt Place Hotel in Charlotte.

Crowds snaked through the lobby, out the door and around the hotel for much of the day. Mel Peter appeared to be the only one in line wearing a tuxedo.

He said he was laid off about a month ago from a catering/host services job and was looking for hotel work, or really, anything else. Looking at the line of people around him, Peter said he was pessimistic about his chances of getting a job through the fair.

As for the tux, he said he wore it because he liked how it looks.

Waxhaw resident Marc Chambers was laid off the day before Christmas from his IT job. If he doesn't land a job soon, he said, he is considering going into business for himself. "I've got a bad taste in my mouth for big companies right now," Chambers said.

Twenty-year-old Dania Meza of Charlotte wants a job as a receptionist or in retail sales, but is getting told that employers want more experience. On the other side of the hotel lobby, Charlotte resident Barbara James feels that at age 49, many employers are looking for younger workers they can pay less. "Our age makes a big difference," said James, who was laid off in October from a clerical job.

The Employment Guide is holding another job fair Thursday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 9315 Statesville Road, Charlotte (Harris Blvd. exit 18 off Interstate 77 near Northlake Mall.) Lyle Stone, general manager of the Employment Guide in Charlotte said the company is planning to hold several more job fairs in Charlotte this year.

A job fair last November attracted about 800 or 900 people, he said.

Looking at the line, Stone said, "You hate to see so many people here."

You nailed it! I wonder how many of these hundreds were legal Americans?
We see so many tribes overrun and undermined

While their invaders dream of lands they've left behind

    Better people...better food...and better beer...

Why move around the world when Eden was so near?
