RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina's unemployment rate jumped to 9.9 percent in June as community colleges, universities, and other state government employers cut 7,600 workers.
The state Employment Security Commission said Friday that the jobless rate rose from May's 9.7 percent rate, the level where it had been stuck for three months.
The number of unemployed increased by more than 9,500 workers to almost 450,000.
Government was the big job-loser in June, cutting 10,200 jobs as school boards, municipalities and state agencies tightened belts.
The number of workers drawing a paycheck has grown by 11,000 in the past year and the number unemployed has fallen by more than 28,000. Official jobless figures don't count as unemployed people who have stopped looking for work or settled for part-time jobs.
