New Bird Flu Virus Strain Shuts Down Indiana Turkey Farm

A new strain of bird flu virus called H7N8 has been found at an Indiana poultry farm — the first case of avian influenza at a poultry farm since last year's devastating multi-state outbreak.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it confirmed the diagnosis Friday morning, and workers have already isolated the farm and begun slaughtering all the birds there and destroying their carcasses.

"This is a different strain of virus than the strain that we saw during the 2015 outbreak," said Dr. T.J. Myers, associate deputy administrator of the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

"This particular case is an H7N8 virus. It is a significant virus that does need an immediate response in order to contain it and prevent spread to other facilities," Myers said.

About 48 million birds died or were slaughtered in the outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian flu that spread to several states last year. The outbreak caused trade partners to stop buying U.S. poultry products and drove up the price of eggs.

"THERE'S NO SINGLE THING THAT YOU CAN POINT TO THAT IS THE ONE AND ONLY FACTOR THAT EXPLAINS THIS."

The USDA is eager to prevent that from happening this time.

Myers says no one has figured out how H5N2 got into U.S. flocks in the first place or how it spread from farm to farm, but he says poultry producers have cracked down on biosecurity measures and hope that they will be enough to prevent spread this time.

"This is a fairly poultry-dense area," Myers told reporters.
"With the outbreak last year we did quite a bit of epidemiological work. There's no single thing that you can point to that is the one and only factor that explains this," Myers said.

There are many different strains of influenza that infect birds. They're designated not only by the names — H5N2 and H7N8, for instance — but also by whether they kill birds.

The H7N8 strain has been found in wild birds, mostly ducks, in the U.S. but it's been a low-pathogenic strain that doesn't make the birds sick.

Highly pathogenic bird flu is rare in the U.S. and Myers says it's not clear how this particular strain mutated into a highly pathogenic form.

The H5N2 strain that caused last year's outbreaks was originally from Asia and probably first came into the country inside the bodies of migrating wild birds. This H7N8 strain appears to be of North American origin, although officials are testing it now to find out its precise characteristics. These genetic fingerprints can sometimes give clues as to where a virus came from.

H7N8 is not known to have ever infected people.Avian influenza viruses do — H5N1 and H7N9 bird flu are both causing occasional human cases and they can be very deadly.

There are avian influenza vaccines for poultry but Myers says the U.S. doesn't have an H7N8 vaccine and says it's not clear that the ones that exist would match this strain. Flu viruses mutate wildly and vaccines must be made fresh for each strain.

Poultry producers usually only vaccinate as a last ditch effort because it's expensive and once birds are vaccinated they cannot be exported, because testing cannot differentiate a vaccinated bird from an infected one.

    Another questionable summation of vaccines......

"testing cannot differentiate a vaccinated bird from an infected one"

That is a lot of disease, 48 million birds worth, necessary to kill because of A VIRUS

----What exactly is allowed to go on in china? All flu stems, originates from their country! Human flu starts there and travels west.

The deadly SARS virus came from their penchant for eating something different so the rich can FEEL SPECIAL. They went deep into forests for the wild civet cat & put them on their menus in expensive restaurants. Served next to near extinct wild tiger parts, NO MEDICAL VALIDATION for the use of animal body parts.

China is responsible for ALL POACHING of endangered species as they are the buyers.

Chinese FLY IN & OUT of the USA everyday - WITHOUT ANY MEDICAL CHECKS AT ALL.

Airplanes are cleaned to look clean. Testing has shown deadly viruses, bacteria etc on many areas, the table, the pockets of the seats etc capable of lasting a week. In this day & age, airlines should be forced to use a technology that zaps & kills these pathogens - UV lights etc.

Turkeys test positive for bird flu at nine Indiana farms

Published January 17, 2016 Associated Press

In this Nov. 2, 2005, file photo, turkeys are seen at a turkey farm near Sauk Centre, Minn. (AP)

HUNTINGBURG, Ind. – Turkeys tested positive for bird flu at nine more Indiana farms near the location where authorities first confirmed a strain different from the one that ravaged the U.S. poultry industry last summer, Indiana authorities said on Saturday.

Farmers began euthanizing turkeys at the new farms even before final results of whether the birds were infected with the H7N8 strain, said Denise Derrer, spokeswoman for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. Final results are expected soon from a government laboratory in Ames, Iowa.

The nine farms are located in Dubois County, about 70 miles from Louisville, Kentucky. All of the new infections are within a quarantine area set up around the first farm and that area has been expanded to four neighboring Indiana counties — Martin, Orange, Crawford and Daviess.

Confirmation of new bird flu cases alarmed industry officials after the rapid spread of the H5N2 virus last year led to the deaths of about 48 million turkeys and chickens, and drove egg prices higher.

"We are very concerned and trying to figure out strategies to contain it," Derrer said of the outbreak.

She said officials are trying to determine how many birds will have to be euthanized at the nine farms. The state animal health board website said one of the farms had 12,000 turkeys and another 23,500. It did not give figures for the other seven. All 60,000 turkeys at the first farm have been euthanized.

It isn't clear whether the mild winter weather played a role in the current outbreak of the virus, state and federal officials said.

The H7N8 virus has not yet been found in wild birds, suggesting that the virus could have developed in wild birds that spent the winter in southern Indiana, USDA spokeswoman Andrea McNally said Friday.

Research has shown that wild birds' northern migration introduced the H5N2 virus, which began to accelerate from farm to farm last spring.

While the H7N8 strain is highly contagious for birds, the USDA said no human infections from the viral strain have been detected.

Indiana's poultry industry brings in $2.5 billion a year, Derrer said, adding that the state leads the country in duck production, is No. 3 in egg production and fourth in turkeys. Dubois County is Indiana's top poultry producer with 1.4 million turkeys, she said.

The Indiana farm where the strain was first found is associated with Farbest Farms, a company that produces about 15 million turkeys a year and has contract growers in Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. Derrer declined to say if the new infections also were on farms linked to the company.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence met Saturday with state and local officials at an incident command center set up since the outbreak. Pence emphasized in a statement that the poultry industry is vital to Indiana and authorities are "bringing all necessary resources to deal with this situation."
