    Nigeria: Weapons Cache Found

    By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

    Published: May 30, 2013

Soldiers in northern Nigeria uncovered an arms cache that the authorities say they believe belonged to members of the Lebanese political party and militant group Hezbollah, the military and secret police said Thursday. Officials said soldiers confiscated the weapons from a home in Kano. The arms, shown on the state-run Nigerian Television Authority, appeared to include badly corroded rocket-propelled grenades, land mines, hand grenades, assault rifles and ammunition. Officials also said three Lebanese men had been arrested. The military did not explain why the men had a weapons cache, other than to say they were part of Hezbollah. Kano has a large Lebanese community.

Nigeria: Huge Weapons Cache Seized in Kano

By Lawal Danjuma Adamu, 30 May 2013

Kano — The Joint Task Force has made the largest weapons discovery yet in Kano during a raid on a house occupied by a foreigner in Bompai area of the city, Daily Trust learnt from security sources yesterday.
The raid has taken two days and was still going on yesterday because of what sources said was the huge volume of the weapons, which were found in a specially-built bunker in the house.
On Monday night, troops laid siege on the area, cordoning off a street located about five kilometres from the state police command headquarters. They then began searching a property along Gaya Road said to be occupied by a Lebanese man, where they found large quantities of guns, bombs, hand grenades, anti-aircraft weapons and unspecified number of ammunitions kept in an underground armoury.
A witness said many AK-47 rifles, 200 factory-made hand grenades, dozens of rocket-propelled grenades, over 100 bombs and anti-aircraft missiles were taken away in a military truck from the house.
"There are so many that I cannot list them for you at a go. In fact, as I'm talking to you we have not finished counting the ammunition recovered in the raid," one source said.
Residents who witnessed the raid said dozens of soldiers took part in the operation to evacuate the weapons, and that soldiers had to use shovels to load the large quantity of ammunitions into a truck.
Security sources said the weapons were hidden inside a massive underground store, constructed under the floor of the bungalow's living room, with an entrance that was concealed inside a wardrobe compartment.
They added that this was the largest discovery of weapons made in Kano since insurgents first attacked the city in January last year. There had been several seizures of weapons in parts of Kano over the past one and a half years, though the city has seen months of lull in the violence.

But one security source sought to downplay the weapons seizure, saying the AK-47 rifles found were only about eight.
Daily Trust gathered that the raid was carried out after the arrest of a suspect at a checkpoint, who led JTF men to the building where he was said to have acquired his weapon.
Neighbours said a Lebanese man occupies the property but that it was owned by a Nigerian residing in the United States.
They described the occupant of the house as an elderly man who works with a construction company. They said he was not living with a family but had a security guard and a pickup vehicle.
"I have never seen him with anyone all these years he has been living here and he never talks to anybody," said a neighbour.
"We were surprised when troops came and cordoned off the neighborhood before storming his residence, and we got the shock of our lives when they later came out with a truckload of arms and ammunition," he added.
Another neighbour said though the occupant of the house does not live with a family, he never received visitors and does not keep late nights.
A security man disclosed that investigators were looking for possible link between the discovery and the ongoing insurgency in parts of the North, even though he said they had enough evidence they were dealing with a "high profile" arms dealer.
"What we have got are sophisticated weapons that are not commonly available even in open arms black markets around the world. Apart from grenades and RPG guns for instance, there are weapons you can use to shoot down aircraft by simply programming them," he said.
"Preliminary investigations are indicating that some of the cache had been stored there even before the current insurgency began. But we want to know who are their clients, if they are arms dealers and for how long the business had been going on," he added.
Daily Trust gathered that the Lebanese and his guard have been moved to Abuja for further investigation.
Security officials also informed Daily Trust that citizens of two other unnamed countries were being investigated over the discovery.
Daily Trust gathered that soldiers had been permanently stationed at the house, as well as roads leading to the area, even as they restrict movements of people in the area.
Officials of the JTF were not available for comments yesterday, but Daily Trust learnt that they may make a public announcement of the weapons discovery today.
