Proposal in NJ Would Allow Warrantless Searches of Homes For Underage Drinking

A proposed law in Montville, New Jersey would allow police to invade private property and search people’s private belongings, if there happens to be suspicion of underage drinking.

A local CBS affiliate interviewed a number of local residents about the new ordinance, and luckily, people seem to have some sanity in this debate.

Anna Marie Cecire of Montville, New Jersey told CBS2 that “I am not in favor of them just coming into the homes, because there – other people have said – there are children that do make mistakes on various occasions, and that’s more of a parent responsibility rather than a police responsibility.”

Even younger people are understanding the gross violation of rights that this ordinance would represent.

“I just feel that it’s not really their business to be going into people’s houses. If you want to do that, you need to get a warrant,” 17-year-old Brendan Zevits said.

High school senior Stephen McManus pointed out that “Just coming in our houses searching – eventually, it’s going to turn into hunches and all that, and once you base it on a hunch, then it’s all downhill from there.”
