Home invaders pose as neighbors with car trouble, shoot Atlanta dad as 2-year-old son naps upstairs

Whitney and Mike Lash said they were robbed at gunpoint this month by a couple of home invaders who claimed they needed help with their car.

An Atlanta mom frantically called 911 after a couple of robbers who posed as new neighbors with car trouble stormed her home and shot her husband — all while the couple’s young son napped through the ordeal.

Whitney and Mike Lash said they had just returned from a family vacation with their 2-year-old son and 6-month old daughter when a band of four robbers stormed their home Aug. 16.

Mike Lash was shot in both of his legs, while his wife and two children were unharmed.

“We really do value every moment we have together now and are just so thankful to have our family be safe and we are all closer than ever,” Whitney Lash told ABC News.

Police have arrested one of four suspects. Brandon Jerome Smith, 18, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault four days after the attack.

The Lashes said they were resettling after their trip when they heard a knock at the door.

Mike Lash answered, and found two young men on his porch, he said. The pair said they had just moved into the neighborhood and needed to borrow a car jack to fix their car, Lash said.

Whitney Lash was inside holding the couple’s 6-month old daughter, Lucy, while their 2-year-old son, Everson, napped upstairs.

Shad a bad feeling about the pair at the door, she said.

“I had a feeling that it was an excuse and we were about to be robbed. Right about that moment, I saw them pull the gun on Mike,” she said.

As Mike Lash tried to block the door, Whitney Lash ran out the back door with Lucy and called 911.

Brandon Jerome Smith, 18, was arrested for armed robbery and aggravated assault.

“We’re being robbed at gunpoint. At the front door, he just pulled a gun on my husband,” she whispered to the dispatcher.

After shooting Mike Lash in the legs, the two door-knockers were joined by two other robbers, and the four rushed into the home. At least one of the invaders chased Whitney Lash in the yard.

That’s when Whitney Lash’s calm whispers turned into frantic cries.

“I have the baby! I have the baby!” she screamed during the 911 call.

The gun-toting attacker eventually caught up with the mom and snatched her phone. Meanwhile, the other invaders ransacked the home as Mike Lash lay wounded on the floor.

“It just went like a silent movie. They started walking in and I remember them coming in and out multiple times, just bringing stuff from our house,” he told ABC News. The four crooks eventually left.

Lash underwent emergency surgery on his legs. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Whitney and Lucy Lash were not harmed in the frantic chase. Litter Everson, who napped through the entire saga, was not hurt, either.

Police are still hunting for the three other suspects, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.
