Sheriff's office says crime is down, disputes Mayor Gordon

The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office disputes claims made in Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon's newspaper editorial, in which he said crime rates in unincorporated parts of the county are on the rise.

MCSO released a new report, which stated that violent crimes including murder, rape, aggravated assault, and armed robbery have actually declined by ten percent from last year.

The Sheriff's Office released general statistics comparing crime during the first seven months of this year to the same time period last year.

MCSO also reported that the number of priority 9-1-1 calls to the Sheriff's Office, which include violent crimes and others such as burglary, assault, and serious traffic accidents, are down by 27 percent.

"In the local media today, the Phoenix mayor says that crime under the Sheriff's jurisdiction is nearing crisis levels," said Sheriff Joe Arpaio. "Patently untrue, crime is down in the county.

"So for the mayor to insinuate my deputies aren't doing a good job fighting crime is wrong," continued Arpaio. "He owes an apology to the 730 deputies who put their lives on the line everyday protecting the public."

According to the East Valley Tribune, Gordon said he would not respond to Arpaio's statement because at this time the Sheriff's Office is the only agency reporting such numbers.

"I will rely on the FBI numbers, and not any other numbers, to judge," said Gordon.

In recent months, a war of words has broken out between Arpaio and Gordon on the sheriff's office's involvement in seeking and arresting undocumented immigrants.

The East Valley Tribune also reports that it's not possible to independently verify MCSO's numbers. Maricopa County also does not audit or attempt to verify MCSO's statistics.
