Washoe County School District Superintendant, Paul Dugan says the possible 14 percent or 40 million dollar cuts for the next biennium would devastate the school district.

He says he will do everything in his power to resist the potential cuts but understands he must begin examining his options.

Dugan says the first possibility would be increasing class size and next instituting a hiring freeze.

Other ideas he would have to look at include

cutting summer school and transportation to student sporting events.
starting a 4-day school week. The school board in one Minnesota school district has already approved a 4-day week.
Dugan says the short school week might sound far-fetched but says he will consider it in crafting proposals to give to his school board.

News 4 spoke with parents who voiced a mixed reaction. Some say it would be a great idea. It would save them money on gas and allow their kids extra time during a 3-day weekend to do homework or get a job.

Others say no way. One mother said, "I don't think 4 days would be enough time to learn everything they need to learn. That would take a full 5 day week."
